I can see one of these on mars. Woot! Replace the fire starters with some ammonium nitrate and sugar... so it burns without air... fills the whole thing with hot CO2, releases, and carries a camera aloft for days... without having to carry pressurized hydrogen or helium... suhweet! maybe put a camera or something on it, to record or even transmit home... and maybe a gps logger... that would be awesome!

GPS ain't gonna work on mars. No constellation of satellites whirring overhead there ya know. ;D

*sigh* I know. GPS only works on or near Earth. Specifically, the satellites don't whir, they simply orbit. There's no air up there, so no whirring sound. Not even a swoosh from Nike. Not yet anyhow. There is a constellation of satellites on Mars, however... they all speak the same language, and can distance-find using one another's radio signals. So, it wouldn't be a Garmin system, but you could sure use a GPS like system on Mars. More specifically, this guy who posted the instructable could duct tape a GPS receiver with a data logger to the bottom of the thing, and see how far and where it went... A-La-Radiosonde GPS on mars... bah!

If and when we move people to Mars permanently I don't doubt that MPS (Mars Positioning Satellites {I just made that up}) satellites that double as Iridium sat phone type comm sats will be one of the first projects no doubt. Hmm..I could write a SciFi story. OP that is a cool balloon. We made one when I was a kid out of a clear drycleaning bag with candles in it. PD got calls about the UFO.
