Not too much deep inspiration or process involved, beyond releasing the cranky dude from his pumpkinny prison (while leaving enough orange so he still looks like a pumpkin). His tongue is the piece that was removed to make his mouth, and it's being propped up with toothpicks stuck into his lower lip, plus a pair of half-toothpicks stuck to the sides of his mouth. Maybe that's why he's so cranky?
