that was a very good summary of need knowledge, from this I only really have one more question: what kind of computer is ideal for having a lot of files or what not but at the same time being able to play this without too much lag/crashing?

It's hard to say really :) I'd recommend something with at least 1 GB of RAM (2 if you're on Vista or Mac OS X) and the best graphics card you can afford from either ATI or nVidea. Avoid laptops and wireless connections — your best results will come from a moderately-high-end desktop computer with good internal air circulation (Second Life will "heat" your graphics card a lot!)
