Pretty decent guide, you might want to add switching from 1 to however many cores on the boot process will boot up speed time, reply if you don't know how to do that.

About Anti-Virus:

I've been running my box with no antivirus whatsoever for over two years, and there's only been one instance where I got a virus. For more experienced computer users, they know what they're doing and running anti-virus free is a great option, really helps with running speed simply because most anti-virus things out there are resource hogs, and the people viewing this guide most likely need as much resource as they can get.

For the less experienced, I've managed to find virtually the best free option for anti-virus, does things way better than nort or anything else I've found, however, it is a combination of things rather than a suite. It basically takes the best of all things and puts it in a very good system.

Using these three programs, you're box will become pretty invincible. My family box that used to be a mosh pit full of viruses has become virtually unkillable due to this.

They are:
AVG Free
Zone Alarm Free
Spybot: Search and Destroy

AVG is the arguably best free antivirus, but in this system it is rarely needed if you start on a clean box.
Zone Alarm checks and lets you decide exactly what connects to the internet. This prevents any networking worm or otherwise from getting to the internet from your box- if a pop up shows up that you have no idea what it is, you can just run AVG in boot time and it'll kill it.
Spybot provides a registry shield. Any changes to your registry at all will be asked about. Any pop up that you get while not installing something will probably be bad.

This system is the best I've come up with over the course of a few years- that is for free anyway.

Cheers, and good luck!

I disagree with you about AVG. AVG is one of the biggest anti-virus resource hogs you can find (not as bad a McAfee, though!). It may be one of the best virus detection programs, but overall it is definitely not the best. I can't disagree about the other programs, though ;-^)

Well, it is one of the better free ones. It seems to work in best conjunction with those programs. As I said, I don't even use anti-virus, because I'm mainly on linux, windows I only use for games, so if this is outdated, then so be it. If you want your computer to run fastest, don't run anti-viruses and just don't be stupid.

Nice i'ble. I have left comments throughout, but have a missing step that you could add in: Disable or minimize the number of restore points - yes this puts you at risk for not being able to roll back from bad installs or updates, but I have also heard of first hand accounts of people getting virii and other crud stuck in them and being unable to get rid of them. The primary purpose of this, however, would be to free up disk space so that defrags are more effective and so that you don't have something always watching what is going on and occasionally creating one of these suckers (which can be fairly intensive on slower hardware).

Definately the benefits outwiegh the risk of keeping it running! What you highlighted is pretty much the approach I take with most of the machines (friends and family) that I "administer"...keep a few restore points around, but get rid of the old crap. On my own machine, I usually turn them off, but that is cause I trust myself enough to not do something stupid (and then I really pay the price when I do do something stupid!), plus I don't have much disk space on the windows partition because I run other OSes on the machine as well.

dude, if you give this to someone and say, "this will wipe all viruses away!!!" you could easily destroy their computer.
