Baby It's Cold Outside! So, I’m going to teach you how to make a Faux Fur Lined Muff and Hat. Muffs are rare these days and wearing one will set you apart. They also pair well with vintage clothing. When I wear mine, I feel somewhat like a rosy-cheek girl in a Victorian Christmas wood etching.

There are other advantages to making and wearing a muff. Here in Pennsylvania, it’s been a bitter cold winter. I have circulatory problems, so even when I wear gloves my fingers are still uncomfortably cold. (This is true for lots of women, as many of us are anemic.) The extra layer of an enclosed, soft, furry muff is just what’s needed to keep fingers warm during wintertime. Furthermore, it’s a simple project that does not take long to make.

For the Muff you will need: 1/2 yard of faux fur, 1/2 yard of quilt bating, and 1/2 yard of fabric for lining (satins and brocades work well).

For the Hat you will need: 1/2 yard of faux fur, 1/2 yard of lining (satin and brocade work well), and a circle drawing compass.

Step 1: Muff Step 1

Cut out quilt bating and lining 12”x18”. Cut out faux fur 15”x18”.

Step 2: Muff Step 2

Sew the lining right side up onto the quilt batting, stitching diagonal lines across the fabric, two inches apart from each other. You can use a straight stitch or a fancy embroidery stitch of your choice. Your lining is now quilted. If you’d rather not quilt your lining, you can simply sew around the edge.

Step 3: Muff Step 3

Place faux fur and lining right sides together. Stitch the two long lines.

Step 4: Muff Step 4

Turn the fabric right side out so that the fur is facing you.

Step 5: Muff Step 5

Match the two short fur ends together, pin, making sure that you don’t catch your lining. This at first seems awkward. Refer to photograph to ensure you are doing this step correctly. Stitch.

Step 6: Muff Step 6

Turn muff so that the fur is on the inside and lining is on the outside. Hand-stitch lining closed.

Step 7: Finishing the Muff

Now, use your extra lining fabric to cut 3” strips of fabric. Sew the strips together so that it is just long enough to wrap around your neck and rest at your waist, leaving extra fabric for the length of your muff.(I am petite, so for me this measures to roughly 45”.) Tri-fold the fabric and sew. Then, slip this strip into your muff and sew the edges together. You can also use ribbon or lace.
If you so desire, decorate your muff by hand-stitching on pearls, lace, feathers, etc.

Step 8: Hat Step 1

Now let's make the faux fur hat.

Cut a strip of faux fur 26”x8”. Cut a strip of lining 26”x4”.

Using a circle drawing compass, cut a circle with a diameter of 8 1/4” from both the lining fabric and faux fur.

Fold the faux fur strip right sides together so that the short ends meet. Pin and stitch short ends. Do the same to the lining.

Step 9: Hat Step 2

With right sides together, pin the faux fur circle to the faux fur strip. Stitch around the top.

Step 10: Hat Step 3

Do the same to the lining.

Step 11: Hat Step 4

Keep faux fur so that the wrong side is facing out. Turn lining so that the right side is facing out. Tuck lining into faux fur, matching seams. (If done correctly, right sides will be together.) Note: Since the faux fur is longer than the lining, it may buckle a bit. Pin and stitch around the bottom, leaving an opening.
