Step 1: Lets begin!

tools include

 • Sewing machine
 • Scissors for paper
 • Scissors of fabric
 • pins
 • needle for hand stitching
 • pen
 • cutting mat and rotary cutter
 • Knitting needle
 • needle nose pliers
 • Armature of an appropriate sized head

Materials needed:

 • Pink Polar Fleece
 • Pink thread
 • 20GA stainless wire
 • Plastic Canvas

Download and print the attached pattern.

Note the attached pattern was modeled on an adult male armature as shown. you may have to adjust the cowl to get it to fit your model. adjustment explanation is in step 5.

This tutorial was PERFECT! I finished my hat and it looks amazing. Thank you for the instructions!

if I made this with flannel instead of polar fleece or regular fleece would it look and work the same?? I'm on a little budget and fleeces can be quite expensive!!

You should be able to but keep in mind that the flannel will droop more. You may have to use bigger wire loops for the ears and sew the inner and outer cowels together along the top seam with the wire loops to keep the ears upright.

OK, I did it! I didn't have the mesh for inside the ears so I seamed the wire into the perimeter of them. I prefer the ears floppy so this is OK. I also added a piece of material to the ends of each long neck piece to simulate the knotted piece that is in the hat (I believe) normally.

Looks great. Thanks for posting. Check your inbox!

Thank you for an actual pattern. Made one for my ADULT son last year and he loved it so much he wore it to a drinking event (he's 26!) and lost it on the train :(. So, for Christmas I'll make him another! Thank you thank you thank you!

You are welcome. I have another instructable set which is slightly modified. Check the related links at the right side of the page.

Thanks so much for the instructions! way better than $35 on etsy

Easy-to-follow instructions and awesome results. Found all the necessary items to make this at Hobby Lobby craft store. This was basically my first time using a sewing machine and I was able to make this amazing hat for my daughter. Thanks!

That is a fantastic job. check your inbox...

I'm making this for my dog. Hes going to be Louise for Halloween and my bf and me are going to be Gene and Tina. A lady at my work is making it for me. I'm going to use elastic at the bottom so i can stay on his head. (i hope this works) Thanks for the instructions

I would love to see the finished hat...

Making this for my Halloween costume this year. I'm new to sewing projects like this, so it might seem like a dumb question to more experienced sewers-- how can I make the lower part of the cowl and the chin straps more form fitting to my head? The crown/top fits nicely, but I dont like the way it flies out from either side of my face. I want it to mold to my head more like a beanie would. Any suggestions?

The pattern was done with general head size in mind. To modify, take the inside (closest to your head) two halves of the cowl and pin them together as you would for sewing. Fit them t you head without sewing and pin the from and rear seam s together to tighten up the fit of the cowl. Trim any excess off of the mid seem and repeat for the outer cowl halves. I hope that this helps...

Thank you for the response. I ended up going ahead with how I thought it should work and it came out pretty decently, as far as the chin strap being a bit closer to my head like I wanted. Thanks for the tutorial. I'm now that much closer to having my Halloween costume completed.

More than happy to help. Post a pic of your finished hat I would love to see it and you will probably not be disappointed with response...

how much did all the materials cost?

The wires are good for the ears but it's not really comfortable. I have to keep on adjusting my ears but the tutorial was real easy!

Thanks. I'm glad that you like it.

Hi! I'm planning to make this for halloween and good tutorial by the way! I just want to ask how much fabric you used? Thank you!

It took about 3/4 of a yard! I bought one yard because I didn't know but I had a lot left over.

The final make used less than a half meter. The design took about 1 meter before it was finalized.

Just made one for my fiancé for Halloween. This is also my very first creation from instructables. This is also the first time I've used a sewing machine since my dad taught me how at 15y/o (I'm 34) so this was a pretty satisfying. Gonna try the brain slug next. Thanks man!
