Dexter isn't really a clothes wearing kind of dog. He tends to bite at anything other than a collar or a harness, so i wanted to make him something simple for Halloween. This Kitty Shark Week Costume 'ible was my inspiration. I decided to use a reflective harness since some parents take the dog along Trick-Or-Treating with the kiddies.

Step 1: Tools & Supplies

You will need 2 pieces of grey felt, a marker, scissors, a hot glue gun, a piece of cardboard, a piece of paper and a dog harness. You can usually get a dog harness at the dollar store. I got mine for $3

Step 2: Making the Fin

Step 1 - The shark fin can only be as long as the top strap of the harness. Lay the harness on a piece of paper and draw a line with the marker.

Step 2 - Free hand draw a shape that resembles a shark fin.

Step 3 - Now draw a rectangle at the bottom of the fin.

Step 4 - Cut out your paper fin, lay it on the double layer of felt and trace the outline. When tracing the outline, leave a little margin away from the paper. Cut out the fin shape that you have traced.

Step 5 - Cut the rectangle off of your paper fin and trace the outline on a piece of cardboard.

Step 6 - Place your cardboard fin onto the felt. You want to make sure that there is a decent margin of felt around the cardboard for gluing. If there isn't a margin, you might have to cut down the cardboard a bit.

Step 7 - Apply a generous amount of hot glue to one side of the cardboard and place it on the felt.

Step 8 - Apply glue to the other side of the cardboard and around the margins of the cardboard. Place the other felt piece on top and press firmly.

Step 3: Attaching the Fin to the Harness

Step 1 - Lay the top strap of the harness on the fin. Mark and cut the pieces of felt that extend over the harness.

Step 2 - Apply a generous amount of hot glue to the underside of one of the felt flaps.

Step 3 - Apply a generous amount of hot glue to the topside of the flap you just glued down. Take the unglued flap, pull it tight and place it over the glue. You may have to trim a little of the felt for a neat appearance.

Things I Would Have Done Better
The fin stayed upright about 80% of the time that Dexter was wearing it. If I had to make this harness again, I would add wires to either side of the cardboard when I was gluing it down, that way I could wrap them around the top strap of the harness to help keep the fin upright.
