Signet Ring

Signet Ring
This instructable will guide you through the steps to create your own signet ring. My end goal was to cast one out of metal myself. I do not at this time have the means or the ready cash to gain the means to acquire the tools necessary. So, I decided to do the next best thing and create one out of other materials. I am overall pleased with the final product. I am planing to design more seals with which to seal my letters. I hope you enjoy.

Step 1Setup the wax for carving

Setup the wax for carving
I did not have good wax for carving so i decided to make a block myself. I first drew a pattern and then cut out a metal form to hold the wax. I then melted a candle into the form.

Would carving the symbol into resin be different from carving it in wax? (being a harder material.)

a better wax for this might be the french wax from http://www.letterseals.com/french-sealing-wax.html

it's a hard wax and would be more durable and less brittle then candle wax. sure, the candle wax may have worked....but this wax would work better.

another idea would be to find the oriental seal blanks (http://www.willsquills.com.au/ChineseSealStones.html), carve your seal in the end, cut it off 1/4 to 3/8 of an in, then epoxy it into your ring. that is if epoxy has any grab on soap stone.

My coat of arms is too detailed to make like this...

I may have a solution for that one..

Heat the tip of a needle on a candle flame and, using a rubber glove, use the needle to draw in the symbol. The heat of the needle tip may help to melt the wax a bit and decrease resistance..

All I have to add is, invest in proper sealing wax. It's an entirely different structure, and makes opening the letters afterwards MUCH easier. Plus, there's no seepage into the paper itself. Much nicer over all. Barnes and Noble definitely has some, and a local hobby shop with a decent stationery section should have it as well.
