Simple Bots

What is a bot? Is it an abbreviation for robot? Perhaps. You could say that. I, on the other hand, like to think of a bot as an abbreviated robot. It is more like a proto-robot. Something that starts to take on the autonomous nature of a robot, but hasn't quite yet evolved complex digital logic.

With this in mind, I set out to make a series of Simple Bots based on the following guidelines:
  1. It needs to be able to be quickly and easily manufactured with readily available items.
  2. It needs to be easily understood.
  3. It needs to be mobile.
  4. It needs to be autonomous.
  5. It needs to be built in such a way that it can later incorporate more complex logic and/or be used as a fundamental element of a more complex organism.

thanks randofo for the guide.I made ALL of them and it was perfect...im currently trying to make a robot that avoids obstacles but does not use a microcontroller/arduino.Do you mind if i post the pictures?

I really love your simple robots. I have been trying to think up a cheap way to make a robot that moves in 8 directions, but never turns. Like these guys.

The best idea so far (from my Brother) is a bot that rests on a ball and uses two motors. I think this bot is doable, but I wondered if you had any better ideas? The direction needs to be controllable from a micro-controller or 8-way joystick plus it should be really cheap.

P.S. may I recommend my DIY 1 inch square Arduino Compatible for your smaller robotics needs? :) It's one of the things I designed it for.

Great stuff.

You had some other bots at the Maker Faire, including a very simple one with 2 CDs and two servos, a walking brush bot that might be related to your walker. My daughter loved them both and wants to make them. Any instructables for them? Or should I just guess?

I want this eBook!! I love Randofo's simple bots, because they're the best for people who don't know much about electronics but love robots (like me!!!).

I just made my own prototype of the Scrub-bot, kind of similar to the one that you put in Rolly. It was created completely from scratch... I used an old scrub brush head (About 1 1/2 inches), dug up a beat-up cell phone and removed the vibrator, electric taped the two AAA batteries together, and made my own sieres connections with some old wire I found. I also made an On/Off switch by clipping apart a wire, stripping it, and making the ends into hooks. Now, when I want to turn in on, I just hook together the wire! Thanks again, randofo, you have kindled my fire for robotics, and I'm LOVIN' IT! Win Guy P.S. I'll see if I can post a picture soon. ;) Peace!

Update: Yesterday I completed a pretty strange-looking robot... I call it the Dune-Bot 1.2 and it has only three wheels, instead of four - I've found that it's easier to drive three wheels along than four. It runs on a Servo motor to turn the rear wheel - That's right, One Wheel Drive! - which I removed from a handheld fan, along with the two AA batteries and their casing. I used only parts from two sources - an old steering wheel toy and the fan - and I completed it in two days. It turns on using the double-hook method, as my Grub-Bot 1.1 uses (For that's what I call it now). Both of my robots also have Wiggle Eyes on them and they look more fun now. My camera isn't working as it should, so I won't be able to put up pictures yet. Win Guy

Hey, randofo!
I finally got around to making photo slideshows of my "EasyBots", and what's more, I won third prize in the I Made It photo contest with the GrubBot! The bots were a lot of fun to make.
