Simple Branching Coat Rack

This rack was inspired by a design I saw on etsy (http://www.etsy.com/listing/66636810/wolf-den-coat-rack?ref=tre-418014206-10).

I do like to support local artists and craftsmen when possible, but at $75, this was not an option for me at the moment. In addition, I had a couple of extra branches and wood laying around. And of course, as always, if it can be built, I will build it.  

I have been teaching my girlfriend how to do basic handiwork, and for this project, I largely instructed and supervised while she assembled it. She did most of the sawing, nailing, and assembling.

Step 1: Supplies and Materials

The materials you will need will depend on how big and long you want your rack (or how much wood you have). I had enough wood to make a small one (15'' long x 13'' tall)

• 1/2'' or 3/4'' plywood or hardwood
• branching branches ( I used 6)
• nails and/or screws (1'' or so will do)
• 2 hanging hooks
• saw
  • handsaw for cutting the branches
  • table saw, miter saw, chop saw, or handsaw to cut the frame.

Oh, that's cool. I had a related idea just now. make the frame like shown, then put some sticks along the front edge of the frame to leave plenty of space behind it. Then, Put a sheet of something diffused with a natural texture like white glass or rice paper, behind in in the frame, then behind that mount a light and the wiring. Bingo- you get a cool installation light that casts tree bra.ch shadows.

nice! that is an awesome idea. I actually did put the branches in the front of the frame. There is a good 5 inches behind them.

Well, throw the diffused thing and the light there and you have combined the two things, plus it makes getting stuff on and off of hooks in the dark much easier.

Just watch that thing at eye level, uncoordinated people like myself might crash right into the hooks.
