Introduction: Simple Reversible Purse

Need a new project to use up some fabric from your stash? Give this a try. This simple, easy reversible purse is an excellent project for the beginner or experienced sewer. Make a fashion statement for yourself or create a lovely gift.

This project is based on directions available on the Martha Stewart website.

Step 1: Supplies

Gather the necessary supplies.

  • 1/2 yd. each of (2) complimentary or contrasting fabrics
  • coordinating thread
  • marking pencil or crayon
  • pins
  • scissors (preferably fabric)
  • needle for hand-sewing
  • sewing machine & iron
HINTS:
  • Prewash both fabrics to limit shrinking after the purse is made.
  • Iron both fabrics before marking and cutting.

Step 2: Pattern Template

Download and print the bag template PDF for the reversible purse.

Step 3: Enlarging the Template

Use a printer or copier to enlarge the template.

Increased the size by 200%.

Assemble your printed pieces into a single template.

Step 4: The Larger Template

Cut out the new larger template.

Step 5: Marking the Pattern Pieces

With right sides together, fold both pieces of fabric matching the selvage edges.

Trace template onto both fabrics.

Step 6: Cutting the Fabric Pieces

Cut out the traced pattern creating (2) pieces from both fabrics.

Step 7: Pin the Pieces

Align and pin one set of pieces together with right sides facing.

Repeat with the second set of pieces.

Step 8: Sewing the Pieces

All seam allowances are 1/4".

Sew across the top of each handle.

Sew along the bottom curve of each piece.

Leave both sides of each handle open.

Step 9: Clipping the Curves

Clip the bottom curved edge so the fabric lays smooth when finished.

Use pinking shears to trim along the seam if you prefer.

Step 10: Assembling the Purse

Turn one of the pieces right-side out.

Insert that piece into the inside-out piece.

Be sure to line up seams, raw edges, and handles.

Step 11: Sewing the Neckline

All seam allowances are 1/4".

Pin the edges of the "neckline" of the bag.

Sew the pieces together.

Clip along the curve or use pinking shears to trim along the seam.

Step 12: Turning the Purse

Using the longer handle opening, turn the entire bag right-side out.

Press all seams so they lay flat.

Step 13: Finishing the Handles

Fold raw edges of "armholes" in 1/4" and press.

Baste the openings together.

Topstitch 1/8" around bag handles to finish. Make sure you catch both sides.

Topstitch 1/8" around neckline to finish.

Press the entire purse with the iron when finished.
