The ONLY change I would make, would be to cap both ends of the pipe, drill a hole through the side at one end, drill a hole in both caps, feed the rope thru the hole in the side, out through the cap closest to the hole in the side, then run the rope down through the inside of the pipe & out through the cap at the back end. I have made many poles for friends like this & never had a problem with them.
The reason for capping the ends, is because 1 time I had a snake crawl inside the pipe & had a heck of a time getting him out as he was wrapped around the rope that was inside the pipe.
capping both ends stops this from happening.
