Understand the different 2 live streaming applications available that are now integrated into social media applications.

Using just your phone, you can now livestream an event, object or person.

According to Sport Social's '6 in the Social Media Trends That Will Take Over 2016', live streaming video is considered to be the next big thing in social media marketing thanks to apps like Periscope and Meerkat, which took the Internet by storm in 2015.

Now on Know How! Click on the steps above for more information.

Step 1: What Is Periscope? and What Does It Do?

Periscope is a “live video streaming platform”, which basically means you can transmit a live recording and live broadcast yourself or event to your Periscope and Twitter followers. Imagine Face-timing someone, but instead of video calling a single person, you’re instead linked up to the whole community. Not only that, whoever’s watching you can comment and ask questions. These show up on your screen whilst broadcasting making it easy to answer and interact.

Step 2: What Are the Advantages of Using Periscope?

It could be game-changer for how news and live events are reported. From a protester capturing the action as it happens in Ukraine, to live streaming the moment Prince William and Kate step out with Princess Charlotte, anyone can instantly broadcast breaking news. Not only that, you can create private broadcasts by selecting the people you’d like to stream to. Imagine if your friend was getting married and you set up a broadcast for the friends and family that couldn’t be there. A word of warning, though, make sure you don’t record any copyrighted material. The app landed in hot water when people streamed the fifth season premiere of Game of Thrones and the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.

According to Sprout Social Periscope has the following advantages and user statistics:

  • Owned by Twitter
  • Available on iOS and Android
  • 2 million daily active users
  • 40 years worth of live video is watched daily
  • Available in 25 languages

Step 3: What Is Meerkat?

Meerkat is an iOS and Android app that can probably best be described as the next logical progressive step from Twitter.

It's a live streaming video app that ties in closely with Twitter, enabling you to instantly broadcast live video from your smartphone. Meerkat will then automatically tweet out links of your broadcast to your Twitter contacts, instantly rounding up a live audience for your exploits and musings.

Once that live stream is finished (your audience can comment in real time), it disappears, capturing that lingering trend for ephemeral social apps.

Meerkat offers a useful scheduling feature that lets its members set the time for their broadcasts. Scheduled streams also appear at the bottom of the feed, helping brands attract new viewers. Existing followers will get a notification when broadcasters put something on the calendar.
Periscope does not offer a scheduling feature.

Step 4: What Are the Advantages of Meerkat?

Meerkat offers a useful scheduling feature that lets its members set the time for their broadcasts. Scheduled streams also appear at the bottom of the feed, helping brands attract new viewers. Existing followers will get a notification when broadcasters put something on the calendar.

Periscope does not offer a scheduling feature.

Meerkat’s comments remain on the screen and can be scrolled through during a live broadcast. The heart button to show you like something is static as well. The interface most closely resembles Tumblr in appearance and available action.

Meerkat:

  • Available on iOS and Android
  • 2 million registered users
  • More than 100,000 videos streamed
  • Available in one language

Step 5: Why Does This Matter to Your Business?

Mobile Friendly

Businesses might see Meerkat and Periscope as the next step from Google Hangouts. But Hangouts are very much tied to laptops and PCs. Meerkat and Periscope offer more portability to the broadcaster, and they reach audiences on a more ubiquitous medium.

Immediate Responses
Video chats make it possible for people to have real-time business conversations without being in the same room. People from different departments—sales, advertising, marketing, HR, customer support—know that a face-to-face conversations can make a big difference.

Faster Production
Video is a major draw for marketers, but preparing a clip for your brand’s YouTube channel can take days, if not weeks, to edit and package. Consider this the other side of the real-time coin, leveraging video for content that lets your brand immediately weigh in on timely topics that, up until recently, were relegated mostly to text. With the whole “a picture is worth a thousand words” adage in play, video can make your brand’s voice that much more impactful in social conversations.

Step 6: What Is Better Periscope Vs Meerkat?

From my perspective Periscope is the better option then Meerkat because of the availability in languages and integration into Twitter. However, if Facebook Live or Instragram Live Streaming does take off then it might give Periscope a run for it's money.
