Solar Power

Solar power is one way to go green, because...solar panels collect energy from the sun and convert it into free electricity without causing any pollution that can cause harm to our mother planet, Earth. With solar panels, we can make many green DIY projects including, vehicles that allow us travel and batteries that power our houses, all powered by the mighty sun!

Check out some of these great Instructables below that can help you go green using solar power!

Question: I've been looking to scavenge some solar cells from old solar calculators, put them together and see if I can rig up a impromptu solar cell. Anyone tried this? If so, what are the power output on those things? I've been trying to find specs, but so far it's a lost cause. b

im pretty sure the solar calcs are on the more inefficient side as far as solar cells go. probably cheaper to go to ebay or somewhere and try to get broken cells, or even whole cells, which will make a neater array. keep an eye on the price of cells and panels for a while. You shouldn't be paying nearly the same price for cells as you would for a fully assembled panel. You would be getting ripped off if you did.

I´ve been lurking in "all for $1" stores....i bought 5 different "CCC´s" (Chinese Cheap Calculator"... Guess what? In 3 (three) of them, the supposed "solar cell" was......a little printed paper!!!!! Anybody (apart from me ) feeling angry? The other 2 had, as intended little ...2 square cm solar cells... I found that, on full sun light, they deliver (open) almost 1,2volts that come to an irrisory 0,6 volts at a current of 3mA Useful? maybe....I can´t imagine what can I do with such a miserly source of power....

lol me too! Reall solar cells have a bit of glass on top of it and yes some solar cells lie about the solar cells. good calculators with real solarcells cost like 1.59. I got one today and it has a pretty good solar cell. Good for sometihng like... a Pummer, maybe? or charge small batteries

calculator cells have like no voltage, i doubt youd get the energy to power a led from that

Mhhh...a "Joule thief" perhaps?

Maybe if you only used one. He said he would "put them together," combining the total power of all the cells.

Hey Plasmana, I made another Instructable. Can you add it to your group?

Thanks!

Ugh, I meant this guide. Sorry for the confusion!
Apr 16, 2009. 7:39 PMdark sponge says:
You can replace the old one with the new one, a lot of people have seen the old one but not the new one. Thanks!

Can you?

Materials for solar panels have got to come from somewhere, and so does the fuel to produce the energy for the assembly. Nothing is free.

How ´bout Geothermal energy? -- AND once no one needs to use fuel, say: everything runs "green" there eventually "will be no ned to use fossil fuels" meaning that stuff becomes "free" in this sense :).

I know exactly, somebody has to because I really want to make a guide

there was one for a couple of days, but then... long story short, it was deleted in a mix-up

luckyyyyyy, how did you get powers? and can a i see an example?

awww, he deleted it... =-(

yeah, totally...

I might make an 'ible. Then we'd have a lot more people making guides.

and i smell a feature HINT HINT, get to work on that ible...
Nov 27, 2008. 7:36 AMGjdj3 says:
Okay, I just finished. I tried to add a lot of detail.

Here.

No, just pm noahw. There's not enough information for an instructable.
Nov 26, 2008. 8:07 PMAnarchistAsian says:
eh, trust me, there's a lot of detail that could be added... or maybe part of a bigger ible.
Nov 26, 2008. 8:15 PMmg0930mg says:
I've made 3 so far, and am making another. There is no way you could make this a full i'ble. It is like a paragraph long.
Nov 27, 2008. 9:51 AMAnarchistAsian says:
look above, he made it, and it looks nice...
Nov 27, 2008. 8:59 AMAnarchistAsian says:
meh, it could be part of an "Instructable formatting" ible, or something..
Nov 27, 2008. 9:50 AMmg0930mg says:
maybe...
Nov 27, 2008. 10:06 AMAnarchistAsian says:
no no, look above, he made it, it's great.
Nov 27, 2008. 2:02 PMGjdj3 says:
I just deleted it. Killerjackalope seems to think that it's pretty useless, and I respect his opinion on it.
