Find out what house you're in by taking a bite out of these sorting hat cupcakes!

INGREDIENTS (makes 24 cupcakes)

-1 box cake mix
-1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
-4 cups powdered sugar
-3 teaspoons vanilla extract
-1 tablespoon milk
(Optional sprinkles)
-bag of regular m&m's
-bag of specialty m&m's (with white pieces)
-bag of caramel candies (48 pieces)
(Optional tootsie rolls)

Step 1: Make Cupcakes and Buttercream

First make your cupcakes. You can use a box mix or your own favorite recipe.

While they're baking prepare the buttercream. I like to make my own fresh buttercream, but you can also use two or three cans of store-bought frosting.

Buttercream frosting recipe (for 24 cupcakes)

-1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
-4 cups powdered sugar
-3 teaspoons vanilla extract
-1 tablespoon milk

Cream butter in a large bowl. Then add sugar one cup at a time, mixing well before adding the next. After all sugar is incorporated, beat in vanilla. Then mix in milk.

If you don't use it right away, put it in the fridge to keep it fresh.

Step 2: Fill and Frost Cupcakes

Sort m&m's into the four houses: red and yellow, blue and white, yellow and brown, and green and white. I used about half a bag of regular m&m's and half a bag of speciality Fourth of July m&m's (for the white).

To fill the cupcakes, use a knife to cut a circle on an angle around the top of the cupcake. A small cone of cupcake should come out. Put in the m&m's. Take the cone and cut off the bottom so you're just left with the circle top. Tuck it back onto the cupcake. Frost the cupcakes and add some sprinkles if you like.

Step 3: Make Sorting Hat Toppers

To make the toppers you'll need a malleable candy. I used caramels for the sorting hats and tootsie rolls for the hogwarts seals, but feel free to use whatever you prefer.

Sorting Hats

Each sorting hat is made of two caramels. To make the top part pull one end and squish it into a point then twist the end down. To make the eyes use a toothpick and press the end in and roll it down to make an indented triangle. Use the toothpick to make a slightly frowning face.

For the bottom of the hat, roll the caramel flat. Pull/twist the caramel to make it more circular and look distressed. Place the top part in the bottom, smushing them together a bit so they stick together. Place on wax paper before using.

Optional Hogwarts Seal

To make the hogwarts topping, you'll need a hogwarts wax seal. Roll the tootsie roll flat and press the seal into it. Carefully peel back. Use a knife to trim the edges. Place on wax paper before using.

Step 4: Add Toppers & Enjoy!

Place the toppers on the cupcakes. The sorting hats tend to lean, so make sure to balance them with the pointed end a little forward.

Once you're done, enjoy!
<p>I love the idea of the caramel sorting hat topper! Check out our variation of these cupcakes. We served them at our Harry Potter party and proceeded to play house point games!
