Here is a little drawing of how i wired the reactive led lights to a usb

This may be a stupid question...but, doesnt a USB port only put out 5v? So how would that power all 12 leds?
mikemorana says: Mar 8, 2013. 4:11 PM
You put the LEDs in parallel (as shown in the circuit diagram) which provides each LED with 5V. Youll need a resistor for each LED.

I need some help with the tip31 transistor. My application is for the display panel of an old audio receiver I'm revamping. After a healthy share of internet research (although not enough), I decided to go with the tip31c. Well - the receiver is an 80W receiver and when I cranked up the volume a bit, the transistor sizzled and burned. My guess is that the 40W power dissipation rating for the TIP31 transistors meant that my 80W receiver was gonna blow it to bits. Great analysis for Capt. Hindsight. So do I need to go with a different transistor or should I forego the effort?

when i cut my jack's line, there are only 2 lines (left and right channel) i cant figure out where is the ground line like in the picture. Can someone help me pls?

can a USB wire be enough to power all these LEDs i guess USB supplies on 5 volts of power.

It may be the most stupid question but I am pretty new to this

How can I replace the headphone jack with a condenser microphone

Can i use a TIP35c for this experiment....

If you wanted to make an 4x4x4 led cube sync with the music, how many volts would you need to power it?
pete54321 says: Sep 25, 2012. 10:35 PM
If it's in series, assume each led is 3v so pretty much times the amount of leds you have by 3 and there's your voltage. In parallel voltage is constant along a circuit, so you would only need 3v, however your amps will need to be higher
smittaunk15 says: May 7, 2012. 1:15 PM
where does the usb and other wire goes to????????
And where i can get TIP 31 led
pete54321 says: Sep 25, 2012. 10:31 PM
The negative wire of the USB goes to the right pin of the transistor, the positive wire from the USB is connected to the positive legs of the LEDS (in parallel)
I would recommend buying the transistor from ebay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/10-pcs-TIP31C-TIP31-NPN-Transistor-3A-100V-New-TO-220-/250855662755?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a6829a4a3#ht_1561wt_1200
or you can just search for one you like yourself, you could probably buy it from somewhere like jaycar

is there a maximum of leds you can use becous i think in need 26 leds
pete54321 says: Sep 25, 2012. 10:27 PM
I have 300 set up in parallel in my room which work just fine. What you'll need to do is check the voltage and amp ratings of the transistor you buy and make sure they're not exceeded by your power supply :)
da_tech_man says: Jun 13, 2012. 12:06 PM
yes and no, the way this is wired in parallel the max is determined by the power supply and this being a usb port it can supply 100ma -500ma on some hubs, it really depends on that

- bottom line if you need 26 leds you have a shot, but you should split it into 2 sets of 13, its your best bet

i have tried with tip31 n it worked well!! i fixed in ma Prado! i was just awesome!! now i wanna connect in ma Lexus so it should b standard!! but this time got tip 32!! can any1 please upload the circuit 4 tip 32??
pete54321 says: Sep 25, 2012. 10:26 PM
I'm happy to be proven wrong, but i don't think this can be done with a tip 32 :/
Agent South says: Sep 11, 2012. 2:06 PM
Does it have to be a TIP 31 transistor or could it be any kind of NPN.
pete54321 says: Sep 25, 2012. 10:25 PM
It needs to be a tip31. any type of tip 31 will do. I personally have been using tip31c transistors.
snoopdog69 says: Sep 13, 2012. 4:12 PM
does your sound have to be at 100% in order for this to work
pete54321 says: Sep 25, 2012. 10:24 PM
no it doesn't. However, the louder your sound is the brighter/more reactive they will be. Pretty much every song has a a different level your volume should be at for them to be just right

i have build the original circuit and it has worked great. I was wondering if there was a way to wire a microphone for this. i am looking to use this in a live setting since lighting set ups cost so much. I have already attempted but with no success, any ideas?
Adambowker98 says: Jun 24, 2012. 6:18 AM
I would suggest replacing the 3.5mm headphone jack with a mic.
ps3techguy says: Jan 17, 2012. 9:39 AM
Umm do you wire the LEDs in series like neg to pos?
Adambowker98 says: Jun 24, 2012. 6:17 AM
No, they are wired in parallel. If you look at the wiring diagram, a positive wire runs through each of the positive legs of the LED and a negative wire runs through each of the negative legs of the LED.
Farash says: Apr 29, 2012. 7:38 AM
how can i connect all the LEDs to the wires?
ajmboarding (author) says: Apr 29, 2012. 12:22 PM
Solder and soldering gun
Farash says: Apr 30, 2012. 12:07 AM
can i make it without a soldering ??
Adambowker98 says: Jun 24, 2012. 6:13 AM
Yes, twist everything together and then tape!
labalavermella says: Oct 28, 2011. 10:32 AM
hi!! i made the same with tip32 and the led are on only touching left or right or ground

Help!!! Thankss!! good prooject!!
ajmboarding (author) says: Apr 29, 2012. 12:24 PM
I'm confused on your question
vicsradios says: Mar 16, 2012. 3:31 PM
A TIP-32 Transistor is PNP, whereas the TIP-31 is NPN.
They are wired for different polarity in a circuit.
mps214 says: Apr 24, 2012. 2:18 PM
is the USB your power source into the wall?
ajmboarding (author) says: Apr 29, 2012. 12:22 PM
No computer, wall didn't work for me
link8853 says: Jan 6, 2012. 9:38 PM
will it work with a TIP 42?
vicsradios says: Mar 16, 2012. 3:32 PM
TIP-42 should not work as shown, since it is a PNP transistor and the TIP-31 is NPN.
autokhin010 says: Feb 24, 2012. 5:17 PM

how do you make a switch so that you can change from music visualization to fade in out ..i think it would be a good idea
KevinAlien26 says: Aug 2, 2011. 6:11 AM
This should workwith a larger jack correct? My stereo system only has the larger one I'm not sure what exact size it is but I'm sure you know which I'm talking about
pjuica says: Jul 6, 2011. 1:10 PM
try but the LED light does not shine with intensity and that you connect 3 led to 12v and still no intensity.

anyone know how I can do to have the intensity of the video?
