Introduction: Spaghetti Pie With Garlic Bread Crust

Spaghetti, meatballs, garlic bread. Never again will you need separate bites to enjoy all the components of a classic dish. As a Pi inspired bonus, it contains circles (the pie), spheres (the meatballs), and cylinders (the spaghetti), all of which use Pi in their equations. I hope you like this delicious new way to eat pie for dinner instead of after!

Step 1: Garlic Bread Crust

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon active dry yeast
 1-1/4 cups lukewarm water
3-1/4 cups flour, plus more for dusting
 1 teaspoon sugar
 1/2 cup cornmeal
 1 teaspoon salt
 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
 1 teaspoon minced garlic

Directions:

In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in 1/4 cup lukewarm water. Add 1/4 cup flour and the sugar; stir together. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 20 minutes.

Stir the remaining 1 cup lukewarm water,  3 cups flour, the cornmeal and salt into the yeast mixture. Combine the melted butter and garlic; mix into the dough. Mix on medium speed until all ingredients are combined and the dough forms a nice round ball. Quickly knead dough on  a lightly floured surface.

Lightly oil a large bowl, add the dough and turn to coat. Cover and set in a warm place until the dough is doubled in size, about 1 hour.

Punch down the dough, then knead for 2 to 3 minutes. Oil the pie plate and sprinkle with cornmeal. Divide dough into two. Set aside half the dough for the top of the pie. Roll out the other half of dough large enough to cover the pie plate. Press dough into the plate and trim around the edges. Aerate the bottom and sides of the crust with a fork.

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F and bake for 10 min.

Step 2: Pepperjack Meatballs

Spaghetti Pie is delicious with or without meatballs. This recipe will make enough meatballs to fill your pie if you so choose, or to have plenty of left overs for meatball subs later.

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon minced garlic
2 teaspoons parsley
3 tablespoons italian seasoning
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 cup dry bread crumbs
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs, beaten
3/4 cup shredded pepperjack cheese
1 1/2 pounds ground beef

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Shape into 1 inch balls.
Spread out on a baking sheet and bake 10 min or until no longer pink inside.

Step 3: Spaghetti Filling

This recipe makes enough to fill two pies.

Ingredients:

1 package spaghetti (16 oz)
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
3 eggs, beaten
1 tablespoon olive or vegetable oil
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
salt and pepper to taste
1 (28 ounce) jar spaghetti sauce

fresh mozzarella

Directions:

Cook spaghetti as directed. Drain, and place in a large bowl. Mix in sauce, shredded cheese, eggs, oil, garlic, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper until well combined.

Step 4: Assembly

Fill pre-baked  crust with spaghetti filling. Top with fresh mozzarella, and meatballs.

Roll out the rest of the dough to cover the top of the pie and make a few slits in the center. If you're feeling fancy, cut small holes in the top crust around the meatballs to expose them. Use any left over dough to make bonus bread sticks!

Bake for 20 min at 350 degrees F.

After baking, brush the top of the pie with butter and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
