Now sorry but this is for vista users only, you can get aftermarket programs but vista has this already. now i dont know how it varys from system to system but this is how mine works. i have windows vista home premium. and by the way this isnt hard to do and most likley everyone knows how to already but this is more for non computer whizzes. Anyways lets get started!

Step 1: Get Materials and install them.

all you will need is......

-A windows vista computer (like i said i dont know how all computers vary)
-A High speed removable storage device Weel just call it a HSRSD (less typing for me) now the HSRSD can be a camera memory card if you have a slot for it on your computer (i do) or a usb drive but some of them will not work because they don't have the right operating speed to work. some will have a fast and slow secton in them only the fast section will work.

ok now plug your "HSRSD" in.........
wait.......
......
the window in the picture should come up...

the problem with ready boost is that your hard drive has faster I/O speeds than the serial bus, so its better to just increase your virtual memory.

Nice way to protect our system. This way i used i think its useful. But I have a software where you can fix your registry errors and invalid entries either that is vista window or XP window. It is also very useful software. This software can speed up your PC also. Try this now !

its 50 bucks for 2 4gb Ram sticks
andrew101 (author) in reply to Gamer917Mar 14, 2009. 7:35 PM
well if you need a drive for storage anyways it is better than nothing.
jellokron413 says: Jul 23, 2008. 11:22 AM
What if your like me and you already maxed to 4gb ram... readyboost help =D you can only buy soooo much ram...
Gamer917 in reply to jellokron413Mar 14, 2009. 1:10 PM
if you have a 64 bit OS, upgrade to 8gb ram, its only 50 bucks
andrew101 (author) in reply to jellokron413Jul 24, 2008. 3:12 PM
well with 4 gigs of ram ur computer has enough ram in it it probably wouldnt make any difference, i cant even think of a situation that it would help. if your computer is slow and u have 4 gigs in it your probably best to upgrade your processor (desktop) or just get a new computer entirely. i say desktop because to upgrade a processor in a laptop it would cost alot to get someone to do it, and they are pretty hard to change out yourself.

All you're doing is telling people how to use ReadyBoost. ReadyBoost gives a very minor speed boost to your system. RAM is cheap. I dunno where you get your $200 price from. Assuming that one's Vista PC is relatively new and uses DDR2 RAM, you can purchase a 512MB stick for about $20 shipped which will speed up the PC much more than ReadyBoost.
bengerszewski in reply to FleaDec 28, 2008. 9:03 AM
i just bought 2 2gb ddr2 ram chips for a total of 40, so 20 each.
Jakecrash in reply to FleaDec 1, 2007. 7:47 PM
so would it be cheaper to use the ready boost or to buy more ram, because i have a laptop and vista as well. So which is cheaper?
Flea in reply to JakecrashDec 1, 2007. 8:35 PM
Price/performance wise, RAM comes out to be much much cheaper. A flash drive is about $10 for 1GB. A RAM module is about $20 for 1GB (it's dropped that much in a few months). The RAM will improve your performance remarkably whereas you *might* be able to notice a difference with ready boost. You also won't have this dongle sticking out of your laptop which I find very annoying.
RAM is pretty easy to install. Most laptops have a slot cover on the bottom. Remove one screw, remove cover, install RAM, replace cover, screw it in.
andrew101 (author) in reply to FleaDec 1, 2007. 9:31 PM
yes that is all true and im not saying its bad at all it was just more conveneint for me because i need my flash drive anyway and i use it often anyway
andrew101 (author) in reply to JakecrashDec 1, 2007. 8:13 PM
i would use easyboost cuz in my opinion it is better but i say that because then you have the memory drive if you need to you can use it to store files too but if all your looking for is speed your probably better to go with ram. it really all depends what you plan on using it for. also if youve had your computer for a long time you may want to clean it out (dust i mean) you may have to het the store that you bought it from to do this if it is still under warrenty or it may void also try defragmenting and cleaning out temporary files and cookies (if ram and ready boost dont work try these).
andrew101 (author) in reply to FleaSep 20, 2007. 12:55 PM
oh whell the point is it worked for me and scince i already had the memory card it was free..... and some people dont know how to use ready boost so thats y its on here
vinnygx3pimp says: Apr 22, 2008. 3:33 PM
ReadyBoost is virtual memory just on a flash drive or sd card. You can have more virtual memory by using your hdd. It does not make much difference unless you have a flash drive that is faster than your ram and fsb. that will not happen until USB 5.0 so don't count on it
andrew101 (author) in reply to vinnygx3pimpApr 23, 2008. 2:40 PM
umm no because if u have a pc that has only say 512 MB of ram it will be faster sorry you are wrong...... besides i notice a very large preformance improvement when it is plugged in
vinnygx3pimp in reply to andrew101May 6, 2008. 12:35 PM
Actually I am right so you have no idea what your talking about
freakmonkey in reply to vinnygx3pimpMay 27, 2008. 12:17 PM
USB2.0 is faster than hdd caching
andrew101 (author) in reply to freakmonkeyMay 27, 2008. 6:50 PM
that is what ive been trying to say this entire time!
ironsmiter says: Sep 21, 2007. 9:57 AM
One thing to remember... Flash drives and memory cards DO have a write cycle limit. In normal operation, 10,000 writes is more than enough to outlast the media's interface... but when used as ram, your card can see many thousands of write cycles in an hour. even at 100,000 cycles limits for good cards, you're gonna burn it out in a year or so. Yet another reason to go with added ram. PS. Other flavors of windows, and linux, etc have this ability too. Just set your swap file to make use of the flash media as well.
zachninme says: Sep 19, 2007. 4:48 PM
It should be noted that all this is doing is moving swap space from your hard drive to a USB device. Note the "Swap space", its not nearly 1/2 as good as RAM.
andrew101 (author) in reply to zachninmeSep 19, 2007. 4:58 PM
but it takes longer to write to most hard drives then to a memory card
zachninme in reply to andrew101Sep 19, 2007. 5:09 PM
Yes, but its not that much slower; at least when compared to RAM.
andrew101 (author) in reply to zachninmeSep 19, 2007. 5:13 PM
the bottom line is if you already dont have more than 2 gigs of ram this will make your computer alot faster and you can run more programs at once. and a hd can only load or save one file at once unless you have a speacial hd as a memory card can be loading a couple at a time.
iraqniphobia in reply to andrew101Sep 20, 2007. 9:03 AM
the bottom is is that it won't make any much difference at all unless you only have 512 MB of ram.

and 1 gig of ram will outperform 512MB of ram with 4gigs of flash with ReadyBoost.

1 gig of ram vs 1 gig of ram+4GBs of flash memory with ready boost will make a very negligible difference.

Any way you look at, it's always just better to throw in a cheap 512MB stick then it is to use 4GBs of ReadyBoost.

(I think I finally have this worded the way I want it to be)
andrew101 (author) in reply to iraqniphobiaSep 20, 2007. 12:49 PM
whell i have 1 gig of ram and a 1 gig memory card (memorystick pro duo with pro adapter) and it makes a really big diffrence
iraqniphobia in reply to andrew101Sep 20, 2007. 12:56 PM
I'll say, if you've already got the Flash memory, go ahead and do this. But don't buy flash memory to speed up your computer. You're better off adding more ram.
andrew101 (author) in reply to iraqniphobiaSep 20, 2007. 1:00 PM
yeah your right but i just did this cuz i already had it;)'

Here's how to really speedup your vista pc, go to control panel appearance and yada select windows sidebar, and turn it off. Then go to system properties / visual effects and select custom and turn off everything but smooth screen fonts. I charge my coworkers $20 to do that for them, they thing I'm a genius ;-)
andrew101 (author) in reply to Tool Using AnimalSep 20, 2007. 12:57 PM
yeah i would do that but i like all the little nicknacks so i keep them on thats why this makes my coputer faster
