Introduction: Spooky Marshmallow Pops
Trick or treat? Trick-or-treaters will be sure to enjoy Spooky Marshmallow Pops! These treats are quick and easy to make and serve as a fun way to celebrate Halloween. Spooky Pops are marshmallows dipped in chocolate. They can be decorated with Halloween sprinkles, candy eyeballs, or anything that suits your fancy! Just don't spook the trick-or-treaters away with your ghostly marshmallow pops!
Ingredients and Materials:
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips
- White chocolate chips
- Marshmallows--either normal or pumpkin shaped
- Toppings--including Halloween sprinkles, Reese's Pieces, candy corn, and candy eyeballs
- Lollipop sticks
- Plates, bowls, mugs, spoons
Step 1: Marshmallow on a Stick
Place a lollipop stick and a marshmallow on a plate. Touch the end of the stick to the bottom middle of the marshmallow, and firmly press the stick deep into the marshmallow. Hold your other hand on the top middle of the marshmallow, and continue pressing the stick into the marshmallow until you feel the end of the stick nearly at the top of the marshmallow. Make as many marshmallows on sticks as you plan to decorate.
Step 2: Melting and Dipping
Dump chocolate chips into a mug or a bowl for melting. You will want to prepare your toppings station before microwaving the chocolate so you will be ready to go when your chocolate is melted. Next, place the mug in the microwave for 30 seconds, check the chocolate chips, stir, and continue microwaving for 30 second intervals until the chips are completely melted. To begin the decorating process, take one marshmallow stick and dip it in the cup. Use a spoon to spread the chocolate evenly over the marshmallow. Once fully covered, do not keep dipping marshmallows; instead, move on to the next step and decorate the current marshmallow before dipping more. Remember, chocolate chips can be melted if they cool, but decorations cannot stick to a marshmallow with hardened chocolate all over it.
Step 3: Decorating the Marshmallows
Move over to your decorating station. The combinations of sprinkles and decorations are limitless! If you are using white chocolate, you can make a ghost! Simply place two candy eyeballs on the marshmallow and find a black sprinkle (I used a bat from my Halloween sprinkle mix) for the mouth. You can use a pumpkin marshmallow to make an eyeball monster by covering the whole marshmallow in candy eyeballs! Other ideas include covering the whole marshmallow in Halloween sprinkles (to easily do this, dump sprinkles on a plate and press the marshmallow to them), sprinkling Reese's pieces on it since they are orange and yellow, placing candy corn on top, or rolling the whole marshmallow in everything!
Step 4: Drying
If you have a chunk of styrofoam, you can stick the chocolate marshmallows into it and let them dry. However, if you do not, you can just gather multiple mugs and set the marshmallows in them to dry. Sometimes I use a spoon or a fork to keep the marshmallow from rolling onto another. After a few minutes, check the marshmallows to see if they are dry. Place them in a container with a lid to keep them fresh. Or, if you want to get festive, stick the marshmallow end into a treat bag and tape shut. Pass them out to trick-or-treaters!
