In 1993 I had the over powering need to learn to Tat. I could not figure it out on my own. While visiting my Mom, I mentioned it to her and she said her Aunt, my great Aunt knew how and maybe she would teach me. A phone call was made and an hour trip was taken to my Great Aunts home and when I left several hours later, I was tatting. It is fun. At one point, someone had taken a lovely vintage tatted table runner, put it on the copy machine and handed out the copy as the pattern. I recieved a copy of that copy. This is the written pattern for that table runner. So here we go with this pattern.

Step 1:

Supplies:
#10 crochet thread (the tighter the twist the better, so the cheap stuff does not do well)
Tatting shuttles
Ball of thread
Scissors

Tatting terms:
ds -double stitch (when you see a whole number such as “2”, that means you make 2 ds)
p - Picot (when you see “-“ in the pattern, that means make a picot)
RW – reverse work
R- ring
ch- chain
+ - attach to p indicated at the end of the sequence

Step 2:

Round 1
R – 2-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-2 RW

Step 3:

ch- 4-4-4-4-4 RW

Step 4:

R – 2-1-1-1-1+1-1-1-1-1-2, attach to the 6th p of the previous R, RW
ch- 4-4-4-4-4 RW

Step 5:

R – 2-1-1-1-1+1-1-1-1-1-2, attach to the 6th p of the previous R, RW
ch- 4-4-4-4-4 RW
R – 2-1-1-1-1+1+1-1-1-1-2, attach to the 6th p of the previous R, attach to the 5th p of same R, RW
ch- 4-4-4-4-4 RW

Step 6:

cut string and tie to ends at the base of the first R

Step 7:

Round 2
*R – 2-2-2+2-2-2, attach to the first p of one the chains of the Round 1 RW
ch- 2-2 RW
R – 2-2-2+2-2-2, attach to the next p of the chain of the Round 1 RW
ch- 4-4-4-4-4 RW
R – 2-2-2+2-2-2, attach to the next p of the chain of the Round 1 RW
ch- 2-2 RW
R – 2-2-2+2-2-2, attach to the next p of the chain of the Round 1 RW
ch- 2-2 RW

Step 8:

Repeat from * 3 times, moving to the next ch of the first round. After last ch, cut thread and tied it to the base of the first R.
This is the first motif.

Step 9:

When you make and add the seconded motif to the first, you will make the first round and when you start the second round, you will attach the p in the chains to the p in the corresponding chains of the previous motif. Then you finish the rest of the 2nd round as normal.
