Step 5Frost the cake.
I used super day-glo orange for the frosting. I used an off the shelf Pilsbury brand white frosting with a liberal amount of orange food color gel.
Top the cake with the hill and the jagged pieces of "land".
I microwaved a little of the frosting for 10 seconds so it was slightly warm and pourable. I poured it around the area of the ramekin opening, and let it dribble down the side of the hill.

Question...what did you use to put up the platforms, and did you set the R2-D2 platform higher than the ramikin so that the fog will escape (with what too?)

I used 3 toothpicks to hold up the platform above the volcano. To make the pylons look thicker, I got these tubular wafer rolls and slid them over the toothpicks, and set the first platfom above the volcano. I only used 2 toothpicks for the second platform, because a portion of it sits on the first platform. I also used the tubular wafers to make the toohpick look thicker. There is a finger width gap between the first platform and ramekin to allow the fog to escape. I didn't play with the gap size too much, but I think if you sit the first platform on top of the volcano without any toothpicks, or gaps, I think the effect would be a more forceful expulsion of gasses. This would probably make it look like a violent, hissing, steam vent.

Yes I did ice the cake first. I used red, orange, and yellow food color in the frosting. Don't mix the frosting too well so there are streaks of color in it. This makes a cool effect. The frosting also keeps the land from sliding around too much during transport. Once the land is on the frosting, get a toothpick and make swirl marks in the frosting thats visible through the cracks. THis makes it look like it's flowing. Thanks for commenting.
