I live in South Africa, <yes, where all the gold is from: http://www.mining-technology.com/projects/mponeng/>, where even a dwarf would be proud of our nations achievements in the realm of mining. When I was young, we could buy small (2xD cell battery) lanterns, similar to the ye oldie mining lanterns, as bicycle accessories. I have had my chrome bicycle lamp  for 15+ years and the bright finish has dwindled with time. Thus I chose to give it a two-tone steampunk inspired paint-job which is described below:

Step 1Materials and Tools

Materials and Tools
To create your own Steampunked Mining Lantern you will require:
1 Ye Oldie Mining lantern + batteries
2* Cans of Metallic Spray Paint
1 Roll of masking Tape
1* brain + 1* coffee
1 NT cutter
1 pair of pliers
1 screwdriver
2 hands <or 1 pair, whichever is closest>

* At first my brain was caffeine free and I thought 3 colours was a good idea. One cup of the good stuff later, I dropped the third colour 'Chocolate Brown' and opted for 'Gun Metal Grey' + 'Good as Gold' + Original Chrome Finish, which proved to be a wise choice in the end <coffee = win>.

During Preparation + Paint:
old newspaper
degreaser/soapy water+cloth
ventilated workspace <35*C (95*F) African sunshine also works, sweat...>

Additionally:
1 length of <0.8mm> wire
1 coffee + 1 sugar + splash o'milk
