However, before students could simply apply to any design school in order to complete their degrees and practice design, they should first learn how to discern and plan the courses and programs they must take in order to get the best and ideal interior design education that suits their respective needs. Below are a couple of guidelines that will help students in the selection of an interior design program:
• Personal Preferences – There are different factors that students consider before turning in their application to the interior design program of the school. Students are highly sensitive to the admission fee, size of campus, distance from home, equipment and facilities, competence of faculty, and academic coursework in the determination of the program where they will apply.
These factors will be made known to students once they visit the website of the school and check the syllabus and general information about the interior design program. Also, students can conduct an interview session with one of the admission representatives of the schools in order to have a better idea on what the program is all about and whether it meets their expectations.
Different program types such as distance learning, certificate programs, seminars, and short courses may not provide a comprehensive coursework compared to brick and mortar, full-time course, but these options nonetheless allow students flexibility in their interior design education in case they are unable to take a full load of education.
• Accreditation – Given the thousands of design schools all over the world, what separates the best from the rest is the accreditation they receive from different design-governing bodies. One of the most well-known accrediting bodies in America is the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (formerly FIDER), an institution responsible for upholding the standards and ideals that each academic program in interior design must meet. Receiving accreditation from the Council determines that the interior design program boasts the proper curriculum, structure, and learning environment that will prepare students for a successful run as an interior designer.
