Of course we had to make a piano tutorial for "It's Over, Isn't It?" from Steven Universe!
If you haven’t seen any episodes of Steven Universe, you absolutely should - the animated TV series about a young boy (named Steven Universe, of course) is a truly magic coming-of-age story - no wonder it has such an active fanbase! It has even been nominated for two Emmy Awards and five Annie Awards!
"It's Over, Isn't It?" is a song from the 8th episode of Season 3, titled “Mr. Greg”, which aired in July 2016 on Cartoon Network and was seen by more than 1.5 million viewers! In the episode, it is sung by the character Pearl (voiced by “The Party”-singer Deedee Magno), in a hotel room, while Steven and Greg are asleep. Pearl is disappointed because Rose chose Greg over her.
The song is a beautiful, melancholic ballad, and she is accompanied almost exclusively by a piano - which makes it a great piano solo piece as well!
The song was arranged by the series’ music team Aivi & Surasshu. It was written by Rebecca Sugar, who created Steven Universe, and she said it was "the hardest song I've written to date". Well, it was certainly worth it!
Here’s a part of the songs’ lyrics:
“I was fine with the men Who would come into her life now and again.
I was fine 'cause I knew That they didn't really matter until you.
I was fine when you came And we fought like it was all some silly game.
Over her, who she'd choose After all those years I never thought I'd lose.
It's over, Isn't it? “
