To say the least, the cost of replacing LCD hinges on laptops has become obscene, and unfortunately the problem is quite common. Currently the price of two poorly designed hinges can run as high as $90.00 and finding new ones is rare or impossible in many cases. The computer manufacturers do not admit their shoddy design and any worthwhile support is practically unheard of. With this in mind, I have set out to design a quick, simple, cheap, but still functional hinge as either a temporary, or a long term solution. By using simple, easy to find materials, as shown in Step 1, here is a laptop hinge that is adjustable in angle, sturdy, inexpensive and simple to install. It will not cause damage to the laptop case.

Step 1: Step 1

Gather up all the materials and find a soft surface
for the laptop to avoid scratching the case.

Step 2: Step 2

Secure a 2 inch pad of Industrial Strength Velcro to
the lower right corner of the Display Cover as shown.

Step 3: Step 3

Secure a length of sewable ribbon to this
Velcro pad. Flip the ribbon over and secure it to the
case with a small dab of silicon adhesive
and allow it to dry.

Step 4: Step 4

Turn the laptop over and apply a 1 1/2
inch pad of industrial strength Velcro to
the lower right hand corner.
Note: Do not block any of the removable
panels on the bottom of the case.
Secure the second length of ribbon to this pad
as shown.

Step 5: Step 5

Both straps are now in place, and can be
safely (but carefully) removed without damaging
the case plastics. Note that the top ribbon is
flpped over as performed in Step 3, which
allows mating with the other ribbon once
the laptop is opened.

Step 6: Step 6

The case can now be opened and the two ribbons
joined at whatever viewing angle is desired. The
ribbon does not interfere in any way with
the keyboard and can easily be tucked inside, and
folded out of the way as the case is closed.

Step 7: Step 7

Voila! A final view of the hack. An easy to install, elegant fix to
inexpensively correct an unfortunately all too common, weak hinge
design flaw in many laptops, especially the Compaq 2700;
a flaw that Compaq or HP still refuse to admit.
Nor will they offer any support to replace these faulty hinges.
