video Stratohab Space Balloon Launch!! Photos of Space! 08/19/2012
On August 19, 2012, we launch a near space balloon on a high school student's budget from Brookfield, CT, equipped with tracking equipment and a Canon camera programmed to take pictures every 15 seconds. We captured the entire journey on film. Watch the video to see how it happened.

An instructable will be published by the end of this week.
5:01 for space photos.

Impressive!

What kind of cameras?
How many cams?
How did you locate it when it was down?

Very nice!

This is amazing! But isn't it dangerous? These kinds of experiments usually require approval so there are no accidents/collisions with other aircraft. Just curious.

Yea, we had to get FAA approval.

Oh ok, nice!

Awesome job!

I couldn't help noticing your balloon seemed fully inflated at ground level - I thought that high-altitude balloons left space for expansion, so that they could fly higher before bursting? Or is that for next time?
robotkid249 (author) says: Aug 21, 2012. 2:05 PM
Sadly, it was fully inflated. Our payload was 4 pounds and we needed the lift in order to get the ascent rate we wanted. That's probably why it bursted at 65,000.
Kiteman says: Aug 21, 2012. 3:09 PM
Maybe a bigger balloon next time?

Hey, why not find a collaborator over the age of 21, and enter the Jack Daniels contest? I bet $25,000 would go a long way to boosting this project!
