Introduction: Super Easy Bacon, Nutella, Banana Kolaches

About: Software QA Test Engineer/Technical Writer

I've never met a Kolache I didn't like. The worst part of enjoying a kolache is making the dough. It takes hours and hours for it to rise. I need something with a little less commitment, so I buy pre-made dough in the form of Rhodes Texas Rolls. They even have a quick method to get the dough to rise. (Only 1.5 hours) Here's the ingredient list:

1 bag of Rhodes Texas Rolls (24 count)

1 pound of thick cut bacon

About 1/2 cup of Nutella (I love this stuff, I put it in/on everything)

3 medium sized bananas

1/4 pound of cheese (I made just a few of these with just bacon and cheese)

Step 1: The Dough

75% of the time required for this recipe is waiting on the dough to rise.

Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees, boil around 2 quarts of water, Spray non-stick cooking spray into 24 muffin tins and place the frozen dough balls in each one. Once the oven is preheated turn it off. Pour boiling water in a shallow pan and put it on the lowest rack in the oven. Place the muffin tins in the oven on the rack just above the boiling water. Leave dough in the over for about 90 minutes, the dough balls should double in size.

Step 2: Fry the Bacon

The is by far my favorite part. I typically cook 3-4 slices at a time on medium low heat. Make sure its nice and crispy, place on a plate covered with a napkin to hold the excess oil.

Step 3: Slice the Bananas

Slice the three bananas up to where you have at least 24 slices. Feel free to eat the extras.

Step 4: Fill and Bake

Once the dough is ready flatten each dough ball and place a teaspoon of Nutella, one banana slice and one piece of bacon in the center of the flattened dough ball. Fold up the edges of the dough around the contents and press the edges together. Place this side of the uncooked kolache down on a cookie sheet coated with non stick cooking spray.

Place the cookie sheets with the kolaches in the oven preheated to 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes until the tops are golden brown. You can brush the tops with butter about halfway through the cooking if you like.

Step 5: Enjoy

Place the cooked kolches on cooling racks.

Feel free to put anything you want into these, one of my favorite is sausage and cheese or Nutella and cream cheese.
