Did you get invited to a fraternity formal weekend but are not the most artistically inclined girl? Or maybe you are in a time crunch to make your cooler? If yes, then you have came to the right place! This super easy to replicate cooler jug is the answer to your problems. While actual coolers are the traditional thing to make for these events, the cooler jug is way more fun and much easier to make. These instructions will show you how to prep, paint, and mod podge an awesome cooler jug. The trick to an easy and quick cooler is to do as minimal freehanded painting as possible, which is why I will show you how to print and apply designs. The only free handed work to be done is writing your dates name! Lets get started…

Step 1: Gather Materials and Supplies

You will need to gather the following:

  • Igloo Sport ½ gallon Jug with Hooks
  • White paint primer
  • Grit/Coarse sandpaper (Rough)
  • General Purpose sandpaper (smooth)
  • Acrylic paint (red, black, green, yellow)
  • Paintbrushes (one thick and one thin)
  • Mod podge
  • Scissors
  • Sharpie paint markers (black and gold glitter)
  • Access to printer with colored ink

Step 2: Prep the Cooler

  1. Sand the cooler with the gritty sandpaper until surface is rough all over. Don’t forget to do the bottom!
  2. Sand cooler again with the smooth sand paper until the cooler is smoothed out. Don’t forget to do the bottom!
  3. Go outside and spray cooler with paint primer then let dry. Don’t forget to spray the bottom! You should put down a protective tarp to prevent staining your surroundings with the primer. Protective equipment such as gloves or goggles should be used, even though I forgot to wear my gloves for this.. Also, don’t worry about getting primer on the surfaces you don’t plan on decorating. It can easily be painted over later.

Step 3: Time to Start Painting!

  1. Apply base coat of paint. For this specific cooler, I used red for half and black for the other half. Allow this layer to dry.
  2. Apply second coat of paint and let it dry.

Step 4: Print Out and Apply Designs! You Can Either Replicate My Cooler Using These Specific Printable Designs or You Can Find/create Your Own.

  4. Apply mod podge to the back of each cut out flower and place on cooler in a vertical row over top of the division line between the red side and the black side. Alternate each flower color as you go down the column then apply mod podge over top of the flowers, plastering them down to the cooler. You should repeat this process on the other division line.
  5. Apply mod podge to the back of the diamond then place on cooler and apply mod podge on top. Allow it to dry.

Step 5: Add Hand Painted/written Touches!

  1. Using a black paint pen, write your formal date's first and last name in large letters vertically on the red side of the jug.
  2. To fill the empty space around the name, paint palm leaves using a thin paintbrush and green paint.
  3. Once the leaves are dry, use a gold glitter marker to add some lines of gold to the leaves.
  4. On the other side of the cooler, trace the black diamond and star with the gold glitter paint marker.
  5. Still using the gold glitter marker, neatly write “FIJI” above the top left edge of the diamond. Then write “formal” above the top right edge. If you are making this for a different fraternity, incorporate their name and formal around the symbol you printed. Be creative!
  6. Still using the gold glitter marker, write “20” along side the bottom left edge of the diamond and “17” along the bottom right edge of the diamond (or whatever year you are recreating this cooler).

Step 6: Fun Extras!

  1. Flip over the cooler so it is resting on the edge of the opening. Paint the bottom of the cooler with black paint and let dry.
  2. Once dry, use yellow paint and a fine paintbrush to write “DRINK UP!” or another fun phrase and allow to dry.

Step 7: Final Touches!

  1. Apply a layer of black paint over the top of the jug to cover any primer that is still showing.
  2. Allow the entire cooler to dry then apple a layer of mod podge.
  3. Apply several layers of mod podge, allowing to fully dry in between layers.
