Retro game sprites translate to most craft projects very easily because they can be counted out pixel by pixel, which is also the basis for many crafting mediums. This blanket was no different...which made it much simpler than everyone thinks!
The whole thing is done using single crochet, so that is the only stitch you need to know how to do in order to make this afghan.

I used Red Heart brand yarn in the following colors, but any brand of worsted weight yarn should do:
-- Parakeet Blue (sky background)
-- Olympic Blue (Mario's overalls)
-- Jockey Red (Mario's shirt)
-- Light Peach (Mario's skin/ground)
-- Emerald Green (grass/turtle shell)
-- Silver Grey (cloud accent)
-- Tangerine (question block)
-- Honey Gold (inside of question black/turtle accents)
-- Claret Brown (ground/bricks/goomba)
-- White
-- Black

I know, I know...but here's why, I tried to do it with a brown shirt and red overalls, but I couldn't get yarn colors that were exact enough to make it look right. The browns kept clashing with the red and it made it look like Mario's shirt and pants sort of faded together and he looked kind of blob-like.
Going with the Donkey Kong Mario was kind of a last resort.
As far as the hat goes...yeah, you're totally right...I have no idea why I did that blue instead of red.
...and it's REALLY bothering me right now.
THANKS, for pointing that out! lol :)
This is so cool I might just crochet my 2nd item. The first was a scarf 20 years ago.
I've got a big dilema with the Tetris one though!
I've decided to make it granny square style, but I can't decide how to lay it out...full lines or not full lines? OR, should I only put Tetris pieces on the bottom half and have a piece falling? Like, maybe a straight piece falling in to place to make a Tetris? Ahhhh, can't decide!
What do you think?
It's got to be the one with the spaces then, right? I wonder if anyone else agrees.
Also, I like less assembly; so would it be more true to the game if the blocks were one piece or joined by granny squares? I'm going to have to get the game boy out and check now. :)
And then...this is also an option...
(Do you see why I said I was still just contemplating it? So many decisions! lol)
That was off of the old Nintendo version. What about the game boy version. The screen was smaller so it didn't show the stats. I found a picture but it's not in color.
How about something like this, with the colored blocks and black spaces in the game area?
Then we can use bright colors like the first set of pictures and not feel compelled to use a color pallet from one of the NES Tetris levels (which was dilema #726 I was dealing with).
Thanks for catching that!
