Those knives you mentioned are great for light-duty EDC tasks, but they would not hold up in a rough survival situation. The Sebie has S35VN and a titanium framelock: it is essentially a fixed blade knife, when opened. It's not going to gunk up, and it's not going to fail. And unless he's chopping through rocks or hardened metal, he's not going to dull the edge or break/bend the blade very easily.
It's a great investment, but honestly, it's not something that I can afford either. I bought a Bradley Alias 2, since it basically has the same materials, for half the price.
lol see if only you were bear grylls you wouldnt need all this crap ;)
I'll tell you i go a lot of backpacking/survival and most of the stuff is all crap!
the things i carry are:
A knife, fire starter, light weight food, a small fishing rod , flashlight ,a sail and
some clothes
(Don't ever take cotton whit you it doesn't dry very fast sow you get very cold!)
i am dutch i translate whit google translate.
grz.
Rambo survival knives are actually about the worst knifes to have for actual survival. they break extremely easily because the handle is only connected to the blade bu a nut and bold. i would suggest kinves with a full tang. my personal favorite- the Ka-Bar combat knife, used by the united states marine corps, or the buck m9 field knife.
When you are lost in the wilderness, you will get angry. At yourself, at the woods, at the world. You will need something to vent your rage other than screaming your head off.
Pencil and paper is this way. It will be more long term.
