Introduction: Sweetheart Cake

What could be sweeter than a heart shaped cake for Valentine's Day? How about a 5-shade heart shape cake? Fun to look at and even more fun to eat, this cake is a great way to say "I love hue" on V-day or any day.

Step 1: Gather the Ingredients

To make this cake you'll need, two boxes of your favorite white boxed cake and the requisite ingredients to prepare the cake as directed (for me that meant vegetable oil, water and eggs) and 4 mini bottles of food coloring--I recommend the following shades: "Red Red," Fuchsia, Electric Pink, and Deep Pink as well as a set of 8 inch heart shaped baking pans.  For the frosting you'll need 2 sticks of butter, 1 package of cream cheese, and 2 1/2 cups of confectioners sugar.

Step 2: Prepare the Cake

Generously grease and flour heart shaped pans and set aside. In a large bowl or stand mixer prepare the cake mixes as directed. Once batter is made, divide equally among 5 medium sized bowls filling each bowl with approximately a cup and a half of cake mix. Leave one of the bowls of batter white then add several drops of dye to each of the remaining bowls. One bowl will become "Red Red," another Fuchsia, another Electric Pink, and another Deep Pink.

Pour white batter into the first greased and prepared pan. Bake at 350°F for 12 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean. Cool in pan for several minutes then carefully turn out over a wire rack to finish cooling completely. Repeat with remaining bowls of batter being sure to rinse, grease and flour the pans in between baking.

While all the cakes are cooling prepare your frosting by combining 2 sticks of butter, 1 8oz package of cream cheese and 2 1/2 cups of confectioners sugar in a large bowl or stand mixer and creaming together until fully incorporated and smooth.

Step 3: Assemble the Cake

To prepare cake, spread a thin layer of frosting on the top of each cake layer then assemble cake on a large plate or serving platter from lightest to darkest. Your order from bottom to top will be: white, Deep Pink, Electric Pink, Fuchsia and lastly "Red, Red." Refrigerate for at least an hour to set the frosting. Slice and serve a generous hunk to your sweetie.
