Introduction: T-Shirt Tassle

Here's part 3 of my t-shirt repurposing journey: T-Shirt Tassels! I had a couple of strips of t-shirt fabric lying around from previous crafts, so decided to make tassels with them. These make great decorations to hang around the house, or even as purse accessories.

Step 1: You Will Need

  • 1 old t-shirt
  • Scissors
  • Yarn

Step 2: Gather Your Fabric

I already had strips of fabric from previous projects, so I didn't need to cut anymore, but if you don't, simply cut off 2 or 3 strips from the old t-shirt as shown.

To make sure you have enough fabric, fold your strips back and forth in ~12cm lengths. If you can pinch enough to make a full tassel as shown in the third picture, move onto the next step.

Step 3: Cut the Yarn

Depending on how long you want the yarn to be, cut off between 30-50cm of yarn and tie it in a loop. Tuck one side of the loop underneath your gather tassel fabric, around 1.5cm away from one of the ends.

Step 4: Wind the Yarn

Carefully wind one side of the loop of yarn around the top of the fabric, producing a layered section of yarn at the top. Get about 12-15 loops around the fabric, to get a nice ~1.5cm section of yarn around the top.

Step 5: Tie Yarn and Secure

Secure the yarn around the fabric by tying it off so that you can pick up the tassel without the whole thing falling apart.

Step 6: Separate Loops

When you cut off strips from the t-shirt, you didn't really get strips, but instead a loop from the front and back of the t-shirt. These loops are still connected in your tassel! To get a really tassel, line up the bottom of the tassel and cut the loops open as shown in the picture. After this step, you're done! Enjoy your cute, homemade tassel!
