This works on induction. i.e. you need to bring some other electronics near the induction coil. If you changed it to being pressure sensitive, then the floor idea would work.

it seems like the size of these boards would make doing a floor difficult. Would it be possible to place the LED's closer together so that you have the illusion of a continuous sheet of lights?

First, I have to say this is a great project. I really want to use the same concept in other types of installations (maybe a bit smaller) around my apartment. A couple things would be helpful for this instructable and so I thought I'd mention them. I found a parts list on your blog that could easily be pasted here. But even more helpful would be a list of part numbers from the supplier you chose (Digikey) so that myself and others could price out the project for ourselves. Also, an estimated cost per unit would be helpful too. That being said, thanks for sharing this great idea!
