How about a pic of it running!

When drilling glass, I have always found it easy to do it outside on the grass, with a garden hose running over the area I am drilling. keeps it lubricated and keeps the heat down.

Wouldn't it also be possible to punch a small hole in the fishbowl using the same method with the torch & run the pump cable out the bottom? You could seal the hole with 2 part plumber's epoxy.

What about using a drill? I'll have to try it, I'm sure it can be done. Maybe a butane torch won't work & you need to use a propane torch... If I find anything, I'll let you know :)

Coming *really* late to this discussion, but a glass drill bit should go through the bowl just fine. Unfortunately, you'll need to either drill a hole big enough for the *plug*, not just the cord, or cut the plug off and splice it back onto the cord after you pass the cord through. I'm not sure which is worse... If you do decide to drill, one good idea is to fill the bowl with sand or dirt, then turn it over and drill from the underside. The sand supports the bowl so the pressure from drilling won't crack the bowl. You can put masking tape over the spot where you're drilling so the bit is less likely to "wander" before it gets a bite. Be sure to keep the bit lubricated, and by that I mean "wet" not "damp." This cools the bit and the glass, protecting both, and also cuts down on the number of chips that may fly away (although when cutting/drilling glass you should ALWAYS wear safety glasses anyway). When you're halfway through, if you can get the bit to the inside of the bowl, that's good because now it's supported from below. This also makes the edge of your hole less likely to chip. Again, keep it lubricated and take your time.

do you think you could fill that with juice or pop or something? it would be kind of a cool way to serve drinks at parties... you could clean the rocks and stuff...

OK, I'm coming *really* late to this discussion, but I would recommend against using any fountain pump for anything but water: usually they're not designed for other fluids and can get gummed up. I suppose if you were willing to replace the pump afterward you could try it. Alternatively, you could look into getting a peristaltic pump, where the mechanism never contacts the liquid, but I suspect they're pricey.

That's a kick-a$$ fountain, man. I'm ecstatic about the painted fishbowl idea. My cat's been bugging me about rebuilding our fountain, (cat likes to drink from it/play in it) after the original metal container rusted through. I haven't found a suitable replacement container yet. Now, I can just get a suitable glass bowl ,and paint that sucka. The inside of the bowl will be gloriously unreactive. I thank you, the cat thanks you, my wife'll prolly thank you too, as the cat should stop knocking over bedside-table, water glasses, in order to play in the spill... btw, the lightbulb's pretty slick too.
