Tater Totes: Potato grow bags

Step 6 Spud harvesting:

The potato plants will continue to grow well beyond the height of the Tater Totes and become top heavy and may fall over. At that time you may want to check around near the bottom of the bag for potatoes.

If you're careful, you may be able to harvest spuds without damaging the plants, allowing the smaller potatoes to continue growing.

These are fantastic...I am wondering if you think the totes would work if instead of putting the tote on the ground, I built a foot deep wood box filled with dirt (that I would change each year) to put underneath the tote.

I'm sure the Totes would work just as well placed over a box of dirt as it would on the ground. Watch that the potato plants don't get too high and topple over, most likely taking the box of dirt with them.

I have anumber of potates plants which have spontaneously sprouted on my compost pile...Do I need to cover the main stalk to avoid poisonous potatoes? I have not checked them in weeks (they are out in the "back 40").

Covering the stems is not the issue, it's the spuds (potatoes) produced that need to be kept covered as they will turn green with sun exposure, which causes the poisonous effect. You might check on them at least weekly and make sure any new taters are covered. Hope you have a bunch!

This is the first year for my Totes, and the fabric is holding up very well. I see no problem with using them again next year and maybe another year after that.
