Taxidermy

Taxidermy, and the preservation of animal specimens has been going on for hundreds of years, yet somehow, it seems brand new to the internet and pop culture. I'm just as enamored with deceased furred and feathered creatures preserved using cotton balls and thread as I am with my iPhone. Throw in some LED's and you've got yourself a timeless Instructable with a recipe for success.

Learn how to taxidermy all kinds of little critters (and then of course sew them on to other little critters) in the Taxidermy Guide.

The mouse mouse is sick; sick in the most epic way possible for mice and metaphors!

This is probably the only thing that has ever creeped me out a lot. It really is sick, if you are just preserving the animal, fine. Even stuffing a deer head to put on a wall or something, ok. But stuffing electronics and mixing animal parts together is just sick. Reminds me of the movie Psycho.

I was wondering, my grandparents own a buffalo farm, is there any chance you have any pointers on that sort of taxidermy? i'm extremely tempted as I believe they have a few young slaughtered each year, and a young buffalo mask would be about perfect for a human head (adults heads can be half as tall as I am)

im sorry, but taxidermy is not good if you kill the animal just to stuff them. i think if your going to do taxidermy the animal should have died of natural causes.

I dont think taxidermy should be done on any animal in any condition whatsoever.

i agree i would never do taxidermy but if it was somthing like your favorite pet or somthing i wouldnt want it to be gone forever and taxidermy could preserve it

Mar 22, 2010. 2:40 PMmaciejewski88 says:
when they do taxidermy of a fish it isn't actually the fish i guess they like make a cast of it or something like that, i'm not really sure how they do it though so don't quote me on it, but thats just what i've heard
Jan 26, 2010. 10:46 PMpaperclip32 says:
you don't.they would just rot, since they have no actual skin.
Apr 10, 2010. 8:45 PMzombiefire says:
they insert formylahyde into the skin using a needle then cover inside of fish with borax and then stuff with saw dust and sew up with fishing wire, once in shape u want and it has dried for an hour u can put clear varnish over shin for longer lasting

hope this helps

can someone post instructions for a rabbit or squirrel that you can make without a mold and does anyone know a good alternative to tanning salt? i don't feel like spending the money on it when i'm not a professional and the animal is so small.

Anything about making a wolpertinger? XD
Mar 22, 2010. 2:45 PMmaciejewski88 says:
i just looked that up and those are great haha. i would recommend buying one of the body molds for a rabbit and then follow the instructions for the wings of a bird posted above, then with the mold cut holes in the scalp of the rabbit and attach like a button buck's antlers to the form head

Hi, we use tow to stuff the animals, but a product with arsenic has to be used to preserve the leather, anyone knows the risks of the usage of arsenic for this pourpose?

jp
jpabloATomnisciens.com
http://www.omnisciens.com
Mar 22, 2010. 2:42 PMmaciejewski88 says:
for furs at least they use oil and a tanning salt. i wouldn't mess with arsenic personally, too high of a risk, may as well use mercury haha
Jan 12, 2010. 1:53 PMicnoc says:
i think arsenic is bad in all uses.. really.. i dont think u should contact with that shiz...
Jul 29, 2009. 7:13 AMszechuan53 says:
yeah, you shouldn't let it touch your skin. I don't think you're stupid enough to drink it, so the risk of arsenic poisoning is about 1/10, so long as you wear gloves, goggles, and whatnot. wash any areas that come in contact immediately. wash all clothes. do not eat taxidermificated animals (or people). you should be fine.

i looked up taxidermy due to my curiousness... the definition i see here is most disturbing.... i think i qualify as the easily offended, overly squeamish, holier that thou, fuss-bucket...

Oh wow... I think my brain just exploded a little bit. I'm a little disturbed by the mouse mouse. Weird. But neat.
