With this pattern and tutorial you can make teddy bears our of pretty much any kind of fabric. For mine I used fleece because i wanted it to be very soft but you can use the normal animal fur fabric if you want.

The pattern I made comes with letters that indicate how to assemble but just in case I also added steps and tips.

MATERIALS:

  • 1 yard of fabric for the body ( I used cream color  fleece)
  • 1/2 yard of fabric for the color details ( I used light brown)
  • 1 set of animal eyes 18mm
  • small piece of felt for the nose
  • Stuff material ( I used polyester filling )
  • Sewing machine
  • Pattern
Hope you enjoy and make your own teddy bear =)

Step 1: Template

The fist this is to download the pattern, print it and cut each piece.

Then you need to trace all of your pieces on the fabric.

For all of those that say you need 2, 1 reverse; after tracing the front, turn the pattern and trace the second piece.

How big is this bear in inches?

Hi! I love this bear and pattern, but I did have a bit of trouble with the instructions. I wrote my own instructions (for myself) and was wondering if I could have your permission to share them on this site with pictures to help others. I would, of course, give all credit for the design and pattern to you.

I like this pattern, and the instructions were ok. The only issue I came across was with the arms and the back. The photos are helpful, but I find that there wasn't enough to explain the arms. But after playing around, I managed to finish my first bear. Which ended up a Present for a Baby Shower. Attached are the current bear's I finished. The brown one is the standard size, the golden one is half the size.

This is an ok pattern. The instructions were extremely vague and the photos really didn't help much. I am an intermediate to advance sewer, and even I had the hardest time with trying to understand how to put it together. Honestly, I had to cut some pieces while sewing because they were so wonky there was no way it would work if I didn't. That part could have been my printers problem readjusting the pattern to fit the page...oh well. In the end it's a cute bear, but it for sure is not for beginners. At least not with the current instructions and photos.

How difficult is this bear to make? I am a very, very unskilled sewer, but, my daughter's step mom passed away and I want to make this for my ex and another for her son out of her favorite bathrobe for them to cuddle with, so, I cannot mess the robe up, I get one chance.

It's not difficult. I suggest practicing your stitching before since you're using a one of a kind piece of fabric. if you're unsure there are little glue pieces you can use instead of sewing. By using an iron you can activate the glue.

However, I suggest using a piece of fabric chalk to mark your lines for where you're going to sew. It helps, especially since you get one chance. Try double sided sticky tape to keep the fabric together while you are in the process of creating the teddy.

Good luck. Hope it comes out well.

Your bear looks awesome! You don't need a sewing machine if you don't want too. Your bear came out just as nice. It's even unique because it was made by hand... literally.

my bear is special because i didn't know that there's an instruction so i used my instincts to finish it with my own hahaha and it end up so cool and also fluffy because i used the cotton on the pillow haha

I am going to try a practice run first. I want to make each of my 3 children a bear out of my wedding dress. I has some stains on it that won't come out after a fire. My sister made each of us a bear from a handmade quilt my grandmother made so I thought this would be a good idea for my dress. Thank you for the pattern and tutorial. I hope it works!

I made this with some left over velvet for my daughter's 3rd birthday and mine came out a little different as I overstuffed it and put the legs on backwards (at least it seems like I did as they don't look quite right to me). However, my daughter loved her bear so much that she has not put it down ever since. I'm planning on making another for my 1 year old son, who was also transfixed by this big black velvet bear. Thanks so much for the pattern. I truly enjoyed making it and will post pics of the two bears once I'm done with them. Hopefully this time, the legs get sewn on right :-D

hey, can you make the instructions better please because i don't understand attatching the back of the head... i think the instructions are very brief and aren't clear or detailed :/ im struggeling D:

I made this bear once and I'm currently making another one.
I had a lot of issues shaping the mouth. I don't quite get how to make it look the way you did. On my first one I just left the mouth the way it was before any shaping and stuck a button on it for the nose and it looks like the rat's nose from the Muppets.
Can you help me out with this?
I also think it would be helpful if you posted more pictures of each step. The ones you have up now are very vague. When I attached the mouth for the first time it took me 5 different tries to get it on right.

How do you sew the head to the body while keeping it neat?
CraftBear says: Feb 14, 2011. 3:41 PM
I love it and really want to make it for a friend of mine! Do you think any material wouldn't work... I was thinking of possibly attempting a fake fur... Also I can't download the template at the moment... It comes up with a server error or something =S Your blog is awesome though! x
CraftBear in reply to CraftBearFeb 15, 2011. 2:42 AM
I have given up with the fur idea, think I will stick to fleece =D

Hi,
I am making this now...so far have bought all materials, cut all pattern pieces, and starting tracing onto fabric. One question - besides guessing/looking at photo - how do I know which pieces are which color (main or accent color)?

And any guess as to the overall size of this bear? It's starting to look quite a bit bigger than I thought! lol.

Thanks.

that's an adorable bear! so far the head looks great I'm having a little trouble with the arms though. it seems like the back is a little shorter then the front.
Deeddeed says: May 14, 2010. 5:36 PM
Could you explain the back a little more, please? (the last two pages on the pdf file) And the legs? I think the round piece with Q and R on it is the brown part of the leg, but I'm not sure. Also, whats the bottom for the leg? I'm a bit slow at this stuff.

Thanks! This is adorable! I hope you continue making patterns-you're very good.
HowJoyful (author) in reply to DeeddeedMay 15, 2010. 11:24 PM
Hi! and Thank you! as a matter of fact yes! the piece with the Q and R is the brown part of the feet, I guess I forgot to change the names of the pieces when I copied the logo on those ones, but I fixed the problem and they have the correct name now =)
The last page is the legs back and the one before that is the back where the tail goes! Hope that helped!

I'm excited you are actually making it!
I'll try to upload some more patterns soon =)
