Step 3: Make it.

Use one of the pointy bits to poke a hole in the bottom of the coke can, then enlarge it to around a quarter of an inch across.

Use the pliers to rip the top out of the can. No need to be pretty, but try and avoid too many sharp ragged edges, and don't bend the can, otherwise it won't fit smoothly into the tin.

Instead of using pliers or a dremel to open the can, use an ordinary can opener it leaves a nice clean edge.

Using a Dremel to cut out the top of the soda can would probably be a better idea. That is if you can afford one. On that same note, I don't know a single self respecting mod meister that doesn't have one of these wonderful tools.

I do stuff like this all the time, and have discovered something shocking; can openers work on coke cans!

Please tell me the circumference of that soup can! I cant find one that size!
Kiteman (author) in reply to MajesticNarwhalJul 21, 2008. 1:15 PM
It's a baked-bean tin, Cross and Blackwell, with a ring-pull lid. The ring-pull leaves a lip which just happens to be almost the same diameter as the Coke can. Since brand packaging can be different in the US & UK, I suggest you spend time wandering the canned-goods aisles with a can of Coke in your hand, trying it out for size.

hey i live in the U.S.A and i am also a minor so i was wondering if there is something i could use instead of meths?
Estwald in reply to the_anacondaJul 7, 2008. 7:17 PM
In the USA meths is known as "denatured alcohol". It is not a regulated item, anyone can buy it. It can be found at pharmacies and in the paint department of hardware and home improvement stores.

ANy flammable liquid should work if you get the hole-size right (different liquids burn at different speeds). I know somebody was working on one using vegetable oil as a domestic water heater, they just had to heat the oil first to get vapours.

I believe a motor-product called Heet has a high alcohol content?

I strongly recommend you do not use gasoline - the risk of explosion is just too great.
DaNerd11 in reply to KitemanJul 7, 2008. 9:09 PM
so i could use lighter fluid?
the_anaconda in reply to KitemanJun 5, 2008. 5:57 AM
Hey kiteman thanks alot i have some Heet left over from my jam jar jet (which still doesn't work properly, i think its my heat sync)

Another way to get the can open would be to use one of those newfangled One Touch canopeners. They cut very nicely from the side and sound like a large electric drill. Of course that's if your household tech geek has decided to buy one and you have it laying around already.

instead of using pliers:) you can just rub the can on flat cement, then just pull the lid off. also good for hiding spots(without the hole in the bottom).

U can use a sharp can opener on the top of the coke can i do that with hot soda to put in ice if i don't want to use a cup.
