The Easiest Way To Soft Mod An Original XBOX

 by daiatlus79

Step 2: File (and how to prepare them!)

Boot up your Xbox without a game in the drive then go to memory. Make sure your thumbdrive is plugged into the controller or otherwise connected to the XBox. Your XBox will say that your thumbdrive is not working correctly and has been erased (i hope you didn't have anything valuable on it!). After this, simply plug that sucker into your computer. when the PC identifies the drive, it will ask if you would like to format it. Don't! Install Xplorer 360 to the desktop and as well, extract the NTSC folder within the compressed folder to the desktop as well. then start X 360 and go to >Drive >Open >Hard Drive or Memory Card. It will identify the thumbdrive as Partition 0 (the thumbdrive has been formated by the XBox as FatX so your PC will not recognize it on its own). Now Drag 'N' Drop the four folders inside NTSC to the right hand of the X 360. This will take about 15 minutes or so as the files aren't simply copied, but 'injected' onto the thumbdrive. So crack a cold one and throw on something to pass the time (it was Hulu for me :D and yes i am in Canada, but i know a way around that ;) )

In your tutorial, you say to "Now Drag 'N' Drop the four folders inside NTSC to the right hand of the X 360"

However, when I download your SID file, there is no NTSC folder, and when I go to load a game in Splinter Cell after copying your SID folder to my USB Stick, There are no save games.

Could you provide a little further clarification? Thanks!

Hey, I've gotten the softmod to work about 90% correctly. I'm using UnleashX and I can't get it to save the skin I want it to use after a reboot. I don't know what that's about.
Also I'm using a 2GB Kingston Datatraveler to transfer files from my computer and everything works fine if my computer is writing to the card, but if the Xbox tries to save anything to it, it comes up with Error 0. Does anybody know what that's about?
daiatlus79 (author) in reply to TaizocMar 21, 2012. 6:50 AM
if you have hacked the xbox successfully, try using FTP to transfer files between pc and xbox. its easier and less of a headache. Filezilla and FlashFXP are two good programs

if this injection process takes any longer im gonna be too drunk to finish the procedure
daiatlus79 (author) in reply to glendalf81Jan 27, 2012. 5:03 PM
lol just be patient. it takes a long time over USB 1.1 lol but the copying from the drive to the xbox wont take nearly as long!

The error message I'm getting when I plug in my flash drive is, "The memory unit you inserted isn't functioning; it may be damaged."
Please help.
(The drive is 2 GB, FAT32, and write-protected)

Did you check to see that your drive is compatible? there is a list of compatible and/ or not compatible drives for the XBox. Just google it....

http://www.instructables.com/id/Softmod-Original-Xbox-Without-Action-Replay-Cover/

There's a picture of the drive I used in that link, just scroll a little bit. Their pretty popular nowadays so I would use that one.

Well, I got the xbox to format my PSP card and another flash drive, but when I plug either of them into the computer, they show up as RAW, not FATX
fishofsword in reply to Axcel_94Jan 12, 2012. 2:55 PM
Now I'm honestly not sure what could be causing that, however, it may be that the computer is unable to recognize FatX formats. Have you tried opening up the xplorer360 program and seeing if that recognizes your flash drive?

itl be the only drive in the list on the left, since Xplorer360 exists only for FATX purposes
Axcel_94 in reply to fishofswordJan 12, 2012. 6:12 PM
I got it!
I wasn't running the newest version of Xplorer360.

Can you please reprase this sentence " Don't! Install Xplorer 360 to the desktop and as well, extract the NTSC folder within the compressed folder to the desktop as well" Im not really sure what you saying here. thank you.
daiatlus79 (author) in reply to Jon316Dec 22, 2011. 7:00 AM
"Don't!" is it's own sentence, as any english teacher will tell you. the exclamation point at the end kind of denotes this. Install Xplorer blah blah blah is a new sentence. so... the sentence means install Xplorer 360 to the desktop, and as well extract the ntsc folder to the desktop... not that hard...

refer to my other instructable that i talked about in the beginning. you mod the controller so that one of the memory card slots is replaced with a usb port.

Injecting the files has taken 45 minutes and counting. Hopefully that's just my case and no one else has to wait that long.
daiatlus79 (author) in reply to danvsullivanMar 5, 2011. 9:30 AM
sounds about right. its a long process

So everything seems to work fine until I try and "inject" the folders to the thumb drive. x360 says its injecting but nothing happens. I've tried using the x 360 and x 360 beta 5 with both vista and win 7 in compatability mode. Do you have any other suggestions on how to get the files onto the thumb drive?
daiatlus79 (author) in reply to 2djMar 5, 2011. 9:29 AM
has to be injected for this hack.
cpk86 in reply to 2djFeb 17, 2011. 4:56 PM
Hey man. I was having this problem too. I ended up using my old computer that is running Windows XP. I was still having trouble with xplorer360. I could get "partition 0" to show up but the files weren't "sticking" to it. This is how I got it to work (somehow haha...):
I opened xplorer360 (beta 6 I believe)
Clicked Drive>Open>Harddrive or memcard...
Partition 0 showed up on the left hand side
I right clicked Partition 0 and clicked Extract
I then extracted a folder onto my desktop that was named Partition 0 (it was empty)
I then took the NTSC files and draged-n-dropped to the right hand side of xplorer360 them per the instructable and they began injecting to the jump drive.

I used a sandisk cruzer 2 gig jump drive with the U3 partition removed.

I also found this list of compatible jump drives:
http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=USB_Mass_Storage_support_in_XBMC

Hope that helps!

same problem here :( says it's injecting (takes 1-2 seconds) then doesn't show up in explorer360 or on the xbox?

nice instructable. what exactly is the way around the Hulu thing?
daiatlus79 (author) in reply to WychiOct 21, 2009. 2:06 PM
you can get a plugin that runs hulu once you have your XBMC upgraded to the most recent version when you FTP the new files to its hard drive... and if you are from other than stateside then the trick may be to run a vpn on the host computer...

I had the same problem on vista. Search in googlr for that file then add it to your program files. (I dont rember the directory)
daiatlus79 (author) in reply to sorcier780Mar 6, 2010. 12:01 PM
ok well try 360 beta 5 and if not... are you running vista or 7? if so right click the program icon, select properties, go to compatibility tab and then select windows xp service pack 2.  this issue you are having may be due to your operating system
