The Easiest Way To Soft Mod An Original XBOX

 by daiatlus79

Step 5: The Fruits of Your Labours!

Just restart the XBox now and enjoy the payoff! XBox Media Centre will play any file format that you throw at it, including MP4, MKV, OGM, DIVX, Xvid, and supports iTunes Network Play, album art, and some kick-ass emulators (those you will have to install yourself besides FCEEmu (NES Emulator included with the installation, but you have to supply the roms, naturally). Now i do not recommend playing movies off of the USB as it is only 1.1 (slow data transfer rate). Network or DVD Drive is recommended (that may be in another tutorial). As well, this WILL allow you to play Backups (burned games) but if you make your own backups, burn them at a low speed, and use DVD-R (some drives have been shown the ability to recognize the +R, +RW, as well as CD-R). Enjoy!!

After using this instructable, I can no longer boot up the original MS dash to switch to HD output. Even when I try to boot from the C/ drive using xbmc's My Files feature, nothing loads and I get a blank screen. Any ideas?
daiatlus79 (author) in reply to mgbill0986Jun 9, 2011. 1:48 PM
well for one, this mod replaces the ms dashboard with xbmc. what are you trying to do in the dashboard?

I'm trying to switch to HD output. I already restored it to the original c drive. If i switch it to HD now, and then remod it, should xbmc recognize hd? Most mods I've seen effectively use xbmc's dashboard reboot option so I was confused when I clicked Dashboard and a blank screen came up.

the HD you are referring to, is that High Definition or Hard Drive? because XBMC does HD (mine is outputting 720p), but you have to upload the latest build sometimes if it isnt there. its under the settings in the video and appearance sections. i use the Progressive cables on mine with an LCD tv and it looks great.

Thank you so much it was pretty easy,
I recommend this to anyone who was having trouble triying the action replay method. This is much much easier.

thanks man, but where can i get the emulators, and the hdd games ?
daiatlus79 (author) in reply to werty670Aug 10, 2010. 5:21 PM
all i can say is google.. and an application called DVD2XBOX will allow you to copy games from disc to the hard drive.. but i recommend a larger hard drive cause they are not small!

I have a question. Does this completely erase the Microsoft OS and replace it with XBMC? I have softmodded my xbox with a similar method but it used an exploit instead.

Do I understand correctly that you can run burned cds without the use of a mod chip?
daiatlus79 (author) in reply to kuzimotoApr 5, 2010. 10:13 AM
ok... it backs up the OS (located in the C Drive of the Xbox)... so it will not delete it.. unless you go in and delete it manually via FTP or XBMC's file manager.  now this IS an exploit... an exploit is where you use a system vulnerability to allow the system to run unsigned code (in this case, a hacked save file).  This, along with the Twilight/Bannerbomb Hack for Wii, and ChickHEN on the PSP, are exploits.  as for playing burned cds...... well..... the Xbox has a hard time recognizing the burned cds... now if its a CD-RW, you will have more luck.  Likewise for DVDs... mine will recognize both DVD+R and DVD-RW, BUT will not recognize DVDRW... go figure.

Ok, makes sense, thanks. Yea, I've heard about the picky qualities of the xbox cdrom drives. I have one of the newer models, so it has one of the nicer drives luckily.

I've actually had no problems whatsoever with my softmoddd xbox playing burned discs. I've used Sony DVD +R, HP DVD -R, and various others I found around my house. If they don't work just try burning it with a slower write speed, or try a new program completely. I've heard sometimes a certain ISO just won't work with a certain program.

now i have tried to play music cds that were burned at 4X and they were not recognized.. but i have had no issues with DVD+/-R.  i tried DVDRW and no dice.. and i burn most everything i have at 4X just to be sure.  i think the CD-R issue was to curb piracy on Microsofts part.  all i know is that i am glad i have my music on my external shared so i can play it on the xbox...

i like ma xbox better now but i still cant back my games up because im not used to using the new software and my harddrive is to small   how to install bigger harddrive
daiatlus79 (author) in reply to maddogus5Feb 26, 2010. 5:09 PM
i think googling will have some answers for you, as i have not attempted to upgrade my hard drive.  as for backing up game discs.. try googling about backing up via ftp.  i will not tell anyone directly how to back up a disc as it can be taken and used for piracy

Hey everyone, It worked great aside from a glitch with the 360xplorer software I downloaded from the link didn't inject the files properly so I had downloaded the 360 beta 5 version without the extreme in the title and that worked fine.
