The Easy 40 Second Egg by Hoopajoo
Featured
Time for another installment of "In the Kitchen With Hoopajoo"!

Your mother always said that breakfast was the most important meal of the day. However, with today's hectic lifestyles, people seldom take time for the morning meal anymore. This instructable will show you how to prepare a perfect egg in less than 1 minute total time. Your mother would be so proud. Remember, cooking times will vary with the power of your microwave. The times given are what works for me since the microwave I'm using is a fairly common one with an average power rating. Let us begin.

Step 1: What you need...

You will need the following:

An egg
Some microwave-safe plastic wrap (I'm partial to the brand shown)
A microwave-safe cup
A saucer and fork for serving

Thank you so much! I have always failed at retaining the yolk in my egg, and this doesn't require any skill on my part! Thanks again :)

I found this recipe after trying several laborious and not very successful soft boiled eggs recipes. It is perfect, especially with the comment about using Pam (or butter).

I read the Pam label, since someone called it a chemical, and it is made with 100% canola oil. It has lecithin from soybeans and the preservative is rosemary extract. It does have a trace of "chemicals," but don't just about all foods?

There seems to be a real issue, however, with the plastic wrap. I wonder if anyone has found an alternative. I tried putting a saucer over the dish, but there must be a better way!

Maybe I should just stop obsessing and enjoy the eggs!

Another way of cooking an egg in a microwave:
Crack an egg into a small cup/Small bowl. (Making sure the bowl isnt too wide)
Put a bit of milk in. Around one and a half Teaspoons.
Whisk it.
Put glad wrap over the top of the Bowl\Cup (Additional sorta, If you dont want your microwave to have little egg pieces everywhere)
Put it in the microwave.
Set the timer for 33-45 seconds. Depending on how powerful your microwave is.

Pros: Doesn't taste rubbery
Is a nice Breakfast, Or a small meal.
Cons: Any sort of Plastic material contains a unhealthy chemical that released when heated.

Additional: Tastes nice with soy sauce. XD

Yes like all.. Works great
Additiions
1 egg 1 min. And turn at 30 sec
Spray Pam or other in bowl before
Plastic wrap or press and seal are the key..both work

Nice 'ible!. With a bit of advance prep you can turn this from good breakfast to great breakfast! One thing I often do is cook up a bunch of chopped onions ahead of time- If I am cooking something that requires sauteed onions (mushrooms, peppers, etc) I will do twice as much and throw them into a container that I keep in the fridge. Just toss in a few spoonfuls of the chopped onions into the egg before cooking and a pinch of salt and badabing! Oh- I almost forgot- a great way to cook a bunch of onions is to do it in the microwave- a bit of oil in a micro safe dish and toss around the onions. I some times keep an onion , ham and cheese mixture ready in the fridge and just add egg. I used to do this a lot when I worked in a building with out a cafeteria - I would cook a microwave egg for breakfast at work.
jochemspek says: Aug 21, 2011. 4:56 AM
I can confirm it works, 'cause ive been doing this myself for as long as we had a microwave - AND you can add mushrooms, cheese and tomatoes to the mix. Just chop small & quickly - I even crumble the mushrooms by hand, doesn't take more than 10 seconds, so that would be the 50 second omelet :)
jdowd says: Aug 12, 2011. 12:15 PM
No way it works!
old_bass_masta says: Jan 20, 2010. 7:21 PM
note to self. don't do 2 eggs at once.
Bad idea, didnt cook thoroughly even when doubled the time
frisbeechamp1983 says: Jul 25, 2011. 9:47 AM
it works, just keep adding time until it is, and make sure your plastic wrap is REALLY tight. I was able to cook like four, but I just had to keep adding time, and kept the plastic pretty darn tight.

Can this work with tupperware or similar microwaveable dishes that come with lids?
Hoopajoo (author) says: Jun 27, 2011. 4:52 PM
I'd expect so as long as a little pressure can build up inside. If you try it, please post your results here for the benefit of all Instructablekind. Thanks!

i just did it... mine blew up and is wayy over cooked and i did it for 30 seconds wat did i do wrong?
Hoopajoo (author) says: Mar 6, 2011. 7:27 PM
Your microwave might be more powerful than this one was. I have a new one now and it did the same thing at the old time. My new microwave (the old one still worked, just wasn't very powerful & I thought it was time for a new one... it was 15 years old) is about 1100 watts. I microwave it for 15 seconds and check it. Then, if necessary, continue in 5 second intervals. Hope this works better for you.

P.S.: You might also try doing this at 30% power with the original given times. The old Microwave was 330 watts so 30% power should make a 1000 watt microwave that same power.

This is perfect, just tried it, added a little butter before microwaving (about a teaspoon) to give it a buttery taste, and it turned out just like in the pictures!

I am having a happy yummy breakfast, Thank you so much!

In many microwave egg cooking instructions on the web, they recommend poking a hole in the yolk with a knife so that the egg doesn't explode.

I enjoy how you toke the time to capitalize, and spell check it all, for such a silly(but effective) idea, you made it look very professional. Thank You.

Sorry for sounding terse. I didn't mean to come across that way. I'm used to some of the more immature on the board picking nits with the tiniest of details or flaws (i.e. typos, slightly blurry photos, etc...). I guess I steel myself a bit expecting it and come across the wrong way.

I know exactly how you feel, check out Adrian mnk's comment on this instructable (http://www.instructables.com/id/%22AudioBook%22/?comments=all#CSN0AXXFOWZOWQZ). dang, some people are very particular, but not connorcancount :)
yay for being pleasant!
Hoopajoo (author) says: Dec 26, 2008. 9:57 AM
Thanks. I try to be as much as possible (although I do have a habit of wearing my heart on my sleeve). I try to overlook the occasional typo or dark/blurry photo and just absorb the lesson of the instructable. Following that path, I've noticed my life is less stressed and happier. Perhaps that is Instructable material too.
connorcancount! says: Sep 26, 2007. 5:38 PM

Toss a frozen sausage patty on top of the egg and cook them together in the microwave. Then toss the whole works onto an english muffin. Instant Egg McMuffin for a fraction of the price.

Hoopajoo (author) says: Nov 4, 2006. 8:06 PM
Yep, totally. There are products on the market that you can get from both WalMart and The Pampered Chef that do this very thing. I just show you an easier and cheaper way of doing it without having to drop $20 in a new kitchen tool.
zachninme says: Dec 16, 2006. 12:38 PM
On the back of Egg Beaters it says to do something similar for scrambled eggs. So it is done once the wrap starts to inflate?
cowscankill says: May 31, 2008. 4:20 PM
It's getting very near done. Make sure the wrap doesn't pop
cowscankill says: Apr 12, 2008. 3:06 PM
Hmmm... i always whisk an egg with a chopstick in a buttered bowl. I stick it in with a cover and serve in a toasted egg-mayonaise sandwich. If you dont whisk well, it blows up :P
obamafan says: May 30, 2008. 4:44 AM
Obviously not from the picture above. You're probably cooking it too long.

My first egg turned into a giant puff-ball, but it was still good. I think I'll add hot-sauce next time. In other news: I've been lurking on this site for three years, but the need to comment on this made me sign up. Good job.
nerdherd4life says: Feb 13, 2008. 8:28 PM
does the yolk cook??? I really like a runny yolk and have not tried this method yet. I would think the yolk would become hard. Does it????
Hoopajoo (author) says: Feb 14, 2008. 5:02 AM
It can come out runny. You just need to adjust the cooking time accordingly.
DragonTattooz says: Aug 11, 2007. 7:14 PM
I just tried this and it worked great! My microwave did a nice job at 40 seconds. I made a slice of toast because I was going to make a sandwich, but then it occurred to me to break-up the toast and throw it in the cup with the egg! 1 dirty cup, 1 dirty fork, 2 minutes of my time and I had a tasty meal. AWESOME!!!

Egg Poaching Video
Great idea! I loved it so much I made a video of it.
Thanks again.
Anionis says: Jun 22, 2007. 10:43 PM
I love it, just made two for lunch. a side note, that on my microwave, it took anywhere from 40 seconds to a minute to cook, on medium. it made flopping popping sounds repeatedly, but only the last one signified that it was finished. the edges turned a little bubbled, but the rest was great. i love this instructable, as since much testing is needed (due to differences in nukes) you get to eat lods of eggs.
Cartuner55 says: Jun 15, 2007. 3:05 PM
my grandma scrambles and cooks eggs in the MICROWAVE! they are rubbery if you dont put plastic wrap on it
doodie says: Apr 19, 2007. 4:50 PM
i just tried this... greatest idea ever .
ROMbler says: Mar 21, 2007. 8:22 AM
Brilliant! I think I have found a new breakfast routine. Cheaper than buying breakfast every morning... and the money I save can go to projects :)
charmrus says: Feb 25, 2007. 8:36 PM
you can put the saucer over the top of the cup if u wanna save some plastic tree's. another quicker way, if you're in a rush is to crack an egg in your mouth (dont swallow it) and just stick your head in the microwave. You might have to rig something so that the microwave will run with the door open. But it is fast.
SarahKB says: Mar 3, 2007. 12:05 AM
keep in mind if you put the saucer on top of the cup the pressure inside may make the saucer jump. Mine hasn't broken or anything, but it's a possibility.
The Dragon Master says: Feb 13, 2007. 6:56 PM
This is pretty similar to a recipe I have for a dessert. Anyone ever tried a chocolate dispersion? Basically it is one part melted chocolate (I prefer to use chocolate syrup to actually melting my own chocolate, simply because I don't like adding the extra time for melting the chocolate), one part egg, and a splash of juice for taste. You blend all that together and then toss it into the microwave for a minute or so, until it is firm and there is no more fluid. The egg acts as a sponge and soaks up the chocolate (mmm.... chocolate sponge...). I've noticed that it doesn't soak up the juice as well so if you put too much in it will tend to kind of lie at the bottom of the bowl.
chenkerchops says: Feb 8, 2007. 10:59 PM
I'll be nuking a few eggs in this manner from now on.
crabezoid says: Feb 6, 2007. 5:04 PM
I only just started doing this last week, except I toast an English muffin and make a sandwich. mmmmmmmm
CMPalmer says: Feb 6, 2007. 2:31 PM
I've been doing this for a while, but my instructions are a bit more complicated. First, I put about 1 tablespoon of water in the bowl, then crack the egg into it. The egg will not mix with the water and the water will help cook the egg. Then I puncture the yolk once with a sharp pointy thing (this usually prevents popping), then I put my serving saucer on top of the bowl and microwave it for 30 or so seconds. Remove the bowl and tilt over the sink to drain any water, then plop the egg out of the bowl onto the nicely warmed saucer (or onto a piece of toast).
electronicfreak22 says: Jan 24, 2007. 5:16 PM
This is awsome. I also loved all of your other instructables. I can't wait for your next one.
Hoopajoo (author) says: Jan 24, 2007. 7:26 PM
Thanks! I'm debating on whether my next one should be a food one, a soldering one or a lock-weakness demo one. Probably soldering seeing how this is soldering month.
NaTeB1 says: Nov 6, 2006. 7:11 AM
This is pretty cool cause I suck at frying eggs I'll have to try it out can you add grease I wonder? for better taste
electronicfreak22 says: Jan 24, 2007. 5:14 PM
I add less than half a teaspoon of margerine to mine - tastes great.
Kactapuss says: Dec 4, 2006. 11:01 PM
to scramble eggs in microwave, crack egg in microwave safe bowl, wisk untill one consistent color, put in microwave, cook untill egg no longer runs in bowl, ie no liquid left. (test your microwave, cooking times vary, in mine it takes about 40 sec though) . You will end with a big egg pancake, if you cut this up and add salt you have scrambled eggs! I do this every morning!

erfonz says: Nov 4, 2006. 4:34 PM
Can you make scrambled eggs like this too?
MySoulWanders says: Nov 8, 2006. 3:42 PM
Like scshoeco33 mentioned this method definately is best for scrambled eggs. Note: For scrambled it is best NOT to cover the cooking container. Also works best to beat/blend the eggs in a seperate container and pretreat the microwave one with cooking spray or light butter wipe. When done right in my opinion it tastes better than traditional pan fried and from what I've read somewhere is supposedly more healthy for you as well.
Hoopajoo (author) says: Nov 4, 2006. 4:43 PM
Yep! But they tend to resemble a quiche. You may need to stop the cooking half way through and scramble them some more before finishing.
Mr.Asmith9 says: Nov 7, 2006. 12:25 AM
I'v Been doing this for awhile myself, exept I didnt know you can do this for eggs over easy, I thout it only worked with scrambled... However I never use the plastic wrap... Does it really increase cooking time? But anyway, Great instructible very usfull!
Hoopajoo (author) says: Nov 7, 2006. 9:44 AM
The plastic wrap increases the cooking pressure instead of the cooking time. It actually acts like a mini pressure cooker to decrease cooking time.
dcshoeco33 says: Nov 4, 2006. 8:48 PM
we have been doing this at our house for over 5 yrs now we always scramble eggs in a bowl with a fork and toss em in outr microwave on high for a minute and they taste great on bread with cheese and miracle whip (egg sandwich) yummy :)
Crash2108 says: Nov 4, 2006. 5:52 PM
Mine turned into popegg and turned to rubber. And then the yoke separated from the whites and was solid.
Hoopajoo (author) says: Nov 4, 2006. 7:21 PM
You might need to reduce your cooking time. Like I said, cooking times vary. Once the egg pops, it's DEFINITELY done.
