Picture of The Flayed Skin Cheeseball

This lovely grotesque appetizer has been a hit at my Halloween party for several years now.

It's tasty, and disgusting all at the same time!
It's also quite easy to make, and will make a great impression on your Halloween guests... if you can just get them to take that first bite!

Hope you enjoy!

I have no idea where to give original credit to.. My friend Erika came up with it originally for our party, but I believe she was inspired by ideas seen in a magazine, and I've modified it since.

If you want more ideas for creepy halloween food, you can check out my blog at

Step 1: Ingredients / Materials

Picture of Ingredients / Materials
Face Mold (You can find the ones used to make masks at an art supply store)*
Wide straw (McDonald's ones work well)

Cheese ball mixture - may need a double recipe, depending on the size of your mold. **
Thin Sliced Prosciutto (3 oz should be plenty)
Several Olives (At least 2 colors.  Get a variety big ones with pits, black & green, and already pitted if you want to play around with what works best.  See Step 3 for details)

Crackers for serving

*If you can't find a mold, you could try this with a hard plastic halloween mask--just line with plastic wrap to cover the eyeholes.  But a mold will work better.
**Use any cheese ball recipe that features cream cheese and will hold it's shape.  If you don't have a favorite, try something like this:

2  8 oz pkgs cream cheese, softened
2-3 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
3 Tbl mayonnaise
1 Tbl horseradish (or cajun seasoning to taste)

Boy. That has to rank right up there with the Kitty Litter Cake.. (http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/kitty-litter-cake/Detail.aspx)...

Okay, I've put one of these together, chilling in the fridge overnight. The wife and kids saw the mold, and the cheese ball mix, and they can't wait to see the final product. But! They didn't see me put it all together, and they don't know about the pastrami. This could be classic.

I love this. What a disgustingly tasty idea for a Halloween party platter.

To make it look even creepier, you can look up an image of facial muscle anatomy and try to lay out your strips of prosciutto the same way.

Awesome Instructable! Thank you for sharing! I see other tantalizing (and terrifying!) delectables on your table spread...what are they? I'm especially curious about the eyeballs...

Thanks for this great instrucable. I made it for our halloween party and it was a real hit. I made a change to the way the eyes were done though. In mine I made some eyes using mozzarella balls and painted then with food coloring. I then took a really sharp knife and cut a slit where the eyes should be and scooped out some of the cheese ball underneath and popped in the eyeballs. Then pushed the "skin" back down to make eye lids. It looked awesome!

Looks awesome...
If you wanted to go a little further with it...
How about using some quail/small eggs for the eyes, add a layer of red pepper jelly (sweet and spicy, great on cream cheese) for a more gruesome look...face mold, ham layer, cheese, layer of jelly and then finish off with more cheese.... that way when you go to cut into it with the spreader, the jelly will ooze out like blood or brains...

This is flippin' awesome!  I may have to try this....I might use two seperate cheeseball sections though.  Toss some red food coloring into the bottom 2/3 and grey food coloring into the top 1/3.  Great Instructable!!

Eyeballs that move would really freak someone out. You should take a gas torch to give it some 3rd degree burns because nothing worse than decaying flesh is burnt decaying flesh. And you forgot the ripped out toungue...

This trumps my finger food. I'm feeling a bit queasy...
