The brilliantly bejeweled Easter eggs of 19th century Russian artist Peter Carl Fabergé are a hallmark of miniaturist engineering and craftsmanship. Forbes magazine's late, great publisher Malcolm Forbes was an avid Fabergé collector, building a set of eggs and objets d'art even a czar would envy. But the Forbes eggs have since moved on to a private collection in Russia, and the people at Forbes miss their eggs!

Now YOU can help craft a new collection. Go crack an egg then paint it, encrust it with shiny matter (rubies optional), insert an empress' LED carriage, or otherwise make it wonderful. The design is entirely up to you: just take your passion and inspiration from Fabergé's brilliant style as you make your own fantastic egg.

Grand prize winner receives a Sonos Multi-Room Music System worth $999. The four runners-up receive a copy of Toby Faber's new book Fabergé's Eggs: The Extraordinary Story of the Masterpieces that Outlived an Empire. The winning eggs will also be featured in the Forbes Galleries in New York City.

Entries can be full instructables or slideshows, but they do need to be your own original work. Slideshows need to include multiple full picture and detail shots and will be judged more strictly than Instructables.

I also want enter the contest :(
Please do!
I did it :-)
I waat to enter the contest. Thanks for offering it. I would love to win a prize.
Is an entry that two people worked on allowable?(mother and daughter)
Definitely - you're welcome to collaborate! You'll just have to share any prizes you win. ;)
questions: 1. is this specifically egg *decoration*, or is it open to a constructed egg (from scratch, no base shape involved)? 2. is there a limit on number of entries per person?
1. You should take your inspiration from Faberge eggs, but there is no requirement ot use an actual egg. Feel free to construct all parts of your entry from scratch.

2. No limit on number of entries per person, so enter as many times as you like. Each individual can only win once.
Does it matter the size of the egg? I'm thinking of making one no larger than a quail egg, or even smaller if I can do it. Would this be a problem, other than for my sanity? The rules don't say anything about size limits and good things often come in very tiny packages.
There are no size limits! You're simply to be inspired by Faberge eggs, wherever that leads you.
Forgot to ask earlier, but I live in Canada, that cold wilderness land North of the US border with the boring political races and residents who are constantly muttering apologies. <LOL> Are non-US residents eligible to win?
I have the same question. Non US residents are allowed to take part in this contest? I'm from Brazil! Thanks!
Indeed! We'd love to see your work.
Yes they are! Please enter.
Do we get answers to our questions? Please? ;)
could we make a egg out of knex? i'm guessing no, but it's worth asking.
I don't think K'Nex would make a convincing egg shape, but you could build something from K'Next to go inside the egg! Lots of the traditional eggs had clockwork mechanisms inside, and there's no limit on the size of the eggs.
well, the bigger you get with knex, the more accurate it looks. it would be hard to make the egg. but something inside the egg is a good idea. i have to get to work!
Why not? Just bling it up, spray it gold, add glitter, excessive quantities of rhinestones...
i guess, i don't know how the rules work. also don't exactly like the idea of spray painting my knex pieces.
gold knex would be great
not really, i still don't know why they have the dark color knex. knex has a color coded system to there building, thats why they have the different colors. you could, but i don't think spray painting knex is a good idea, theres lots of holes in knex that are needed so they work right.
I have a question. Do the decorated eggs have to use a real eggshell, or can a plastic easter egg or a paper machie egg be decorated?
Fake eggshells are fine. Make something awesome!
A fake eggshell would be fine. Just make it fancy!
Hellz yeah.
Can't wait to post mine!
I just posted the instructable a little while ago...
