"The Girl from Ipanema" is one of the most famous bossa nova jazz songs - learn how to play it with this piano tutorial!

The song is from the 1964 album Getz/Gilberto by Stan Getz and João Gilberto, one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time. The vocals were performed by Gilberto's wife Astrud, who wasn’t known as a singer before that - after the release, she became a star!

"The Girl from Ipanema" was also released as a single in 1964, reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1965 and became the second-most recorded song in history (after the Beatles’ “Yesterday”). Of course, the song is also listed in the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame.

During the opening ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympics, the song was played when Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen entered the stage - quite a show!

Here are the song’s famous lyrics:

“Tall and tan and young and lovely The girl from Ipanema goes walking And when she passes, each one she passes goes - ah When she walks, she's like a samba That swings so cool and sways so gentle That when she passes, each one she passes goes - ooh (Ooh) But I watch her so sadly How can I tell her I love her But each day, when she walks to the sea She looks straight ahead, not at me”
