The Glueless, Poseable Cardboard Robot. by Kiteman

OK, maybe not such a good idea for a contest organised by a glue manufacturer, but I was inspired.

The whole model is held together with friction, but is (fairly) poseable.

...and it has claws!

Step 1: Materials and tools

Most of the robot's body is built of corrugated card, but the forearms and claws are light cardstock, and most of the joints are rolled paper.

The wrist joints need a cocktail stick or toothpick.

I also used 5mm-squared paper for sketching templates, and a sharp craft knife ("Stanley" or "Xacto" type) for cutting the card, and my Leatherman for balancing the half-built beast.

Oh, and a powerdrill. (You'll see...)

using kebab skewers might be better...

But then it wouldn't be 100% paper and card, which was the aim. (And they're narrower, so more likely to slip.)

you could put this in the auto desk kinetic sculpture contest!!!
Kiteman (author) says: Oct 13, 2010. 10:26 AM
It's too old, and doesn't actually move...

Kiteman (author) says: Aug 31, 2009. 4:49 AM
You can't call him cute, he's a big stompy robot that says grrrr - didn't you hear him?

;-)
porcupinemamma says: Sep 4, 2009. 3:43 AM
Oh excellent! Does he deal with difficult children, and if so, could you send him over? ;0) ;0) BTW; what is his name?
Kiteman (author) says: Sep 4, 2009. 4:43 AM
Er, let's call him Grrr, shall we?
flio191 says: Sep 8, 2009. 7:08 PM

cowscankill says: Aug 31, 2009. 6:15 AM
I'm at school. But I am doing this from now on when I get home (by from now on, I mean for making little posable dummies. The other way I did sucked, but this way I can still pose it and light it on fire :D).
Kiteman (author) says: Aug 31, 2009. 10:03 AM
Er.. right. I guess we'll be expecting a video?
cowscankill says: Aug 31, 2009. 1:36 PM
Er... Maybe... :D Depends on what is on my agenda, like the cardboard helmet I was supposed to submit but got ruined by the stupid rain!

Just lock yourself in a room with card, glue, scissors, and pdfs of all the projects you want to make. (Not with internet access - you'll never get anything done.)
Sunbanks says: Aug 30, 2009. 5:15 PM
The claws make it even better :D
Kiteman (author) says: Aug 31, 2009. 1:48 AM
They are my personal favourite part of the whole thing - their design came to me before the rest.

Good grief - that is the fastest comment I have ever had!

I had thought of it holding things, but the current version of the joints aren't strong enough - maybe if I used split-pins instead of paper, but I wanted it to be as close to 100% card as possible.
ikoda says: Aug 30, 2009. 8:33 PM
Toothpicks?
Kiteman (author) says: Aug 31, 2009. 1:47 AM
I used a cocktail stick for the wrists, since there's very little weight there. For friction-hold joints, the thing in the middle needs to be larger diameter. Maybe rubber-coated. At the moment, that's an idea for others to run with, since school starts on Wednesday and I have documents to write for colleagues...
