The K'nexecutioner 2.11 - "Cyclone"

 by Perfect Duck
The long-awaited sequel to the original extra-heavy K'nex machine gun, Cyclone wipes the floor with its predecessor in every category - power, range, portability, versatility.

Designed to be the most powerful* K'nex fully-auto machine gun yet. Really - every single round of Cyclone's belt carries some decent strengh for a K'nex gun.

- If you have enough pieces, build two! It's one-handed.

- Unlike its picky predecessor, Cyclone has an open front and can use any size of rod for ammo. This includes flighted 'sniper' rounds.

Version History (updated):
2.0 - "Cyclone" first created but kept classified. Based off of the likewise-named weapon from Perfect Dark, it was powerful and fast-firing, but pitiful that only 17 of 19 barrels were usable.
2.1 - Extensive restructuring was necessary to make it fire from the top where barrels are further apart, instead of the side. This new layout is more compact.
2.11 - Significant improvement made to ammunition belt allowing for variable ammo sizes.

** Before you build: Know that not all K'nex motors are made equal. Some K'nex motors (at least a few of mine that I know for sure) are incapable of being used on the Cyclone because they too easily start clicking under too much load. Proceed if you are confident you have a good motor. Just a fair warning. **

*Hardest hitting, not fastest rpm.

Step 1: The Ammunition Belt

If you haven't the parts for the ammo belt, there'd be no point in continuing past this step, so let's get the tedious, hard, annoying, etc. part done first.

Find an efficient method for building them, else you'll be spending a lot of time on this step. (okay, it will take a long time regardless)

This step alone requires:
209 dark-grey connectors
209 blue spacers
57 grey spacers (each counts as 3 blue spacers)
57 black chain-links
57 red and light-grey connectors
.. among other things.

Use 2x type 64 rubber bands only! Too much power may result in broken K'nex pieces.

For simplicity's sake when attaching and removing the ammo belt, make sure that every black chain link is facing down.

Cyclone requires a specific number of barrels, unlike other open-belt machine guns. 19, to be exact. Get to it!

Absolutely amazing. A bit heavy though and the chain will only turn if you have a powerful motor but still great.

better than the one with twin belt(simple and seem easier to make and it looks light wieght

and to make two i mean holy s***!!!!!
travw says: Jul 18, 2009. 9:02 PM
I know this is an old gun, but here's what I think: It's way too front heavy, and I had a problem with the elbow rest breaking off, it's pretty powerful and has a good range, but I would never, never use it in war.

Why wouldn't you use it in a k'nex war? If you want to use a machine gun then you would use this one.

DJ Radio in reply to Mace!Aug 13, 2009. 7:40 AM
The only reason I wouldnt use this in a knex war is the reload times.
Mace! in reply to DJ RadioAug 22, 2009. 12:57 PM
So you would'nt use a machine gun period...........
DJ Radio in reply to Mace!Aug 22, 2009. 2:21 PM
If it doesnt require me to reload, I would use it. Otherwise, its a disposable gun.
Perfect Duck (author) in reply to DJ RadioAug 22, 2009. 6:35 PM
It's the opposite way of thinking for me, I see the reloading of machine guns as potential and not a drawback. Scenario: Say you have 19 shots. You fire 5. You have the time to load 2 more shots. You have 16 shots left and fire another 10 (perhaps too many), but an opposing player is outgunned and defeated. You use cover that you've gained to reload, and this time manage to reload 11 barrels, a few at a time. Now you've got 17 shots, etc. You have the ability to spend your idle time building up a very powerful multi-shot attack that you can use and dispense freely, and then once you're safe you're back to building up that potential again. The Cyclone is always ready to fire at moment's notice and you can easily take advantage of safe cover. Cyclone reloading is simple, you pull the pin back, the trigger for that individual pin will automatically set itself, then you reach to the front to slide a rod in, and set the holder and you're good. Reloading all 19 at a time would be cumbersome but doing it one, two at a time in the heat of a battle scenario could be easily pulled off. Hope that dispels a bit of your concern about reloading, but if you still think it takes too long, you're probably right because other K'nex weapons ARE easier to reload, I'll admit. The biggest competition are pump-actions.
Revan_Taros in reply to Perfect DuckJan 9, 2011. 12:25 AM

travw in reply to DJ RadioAug 29, 2009. 2:03 PM
Well, actually, I can reload a Knexsayer faster than an AR-4 v3. Which is odd, considering AR-4 v3 holds less rounds than Knexsayer.
DJ Radio in reply to travwAug 29, 2009. 2:07 PM
The newest version holds 1 more round than the knexsayer. The modded one has a 9 round hopper, which I think you have not seen....

True, but if I did use it, I'd probably unload the whole thing, then switch to a different gun.
travw in reply to Mace!Jul 25, 2009. 3:21 PM
.....Because of what I said??? Maybe if it was mounted on some sort of rotating turret, but otherwise, the back portion breaks off and the whole thing plops to the ground... There were broken pieces everywhere!!1 Want that to happen in the middle of a battle?
Perfect Duck (author) in reply to travwJul 25, 2009. 8:49 PM
You must have built it incorrectly because the elbow rests hold true to their structure even when I swing it moderately into the load-bearing section. I wouldn't post anything that is prone to structural failure. As far as it being front-heavy, I also created a mod for it that gave extended structure out the front of it, providing another handle in the front far out enough so that it doesn't interfere with yellow rod sized ammo. I never posted that version, though.

Perfect Duck (author) in reply to cool bas3Sep 30, 2009. 8:51 AM
Orange connectors, once the round is loaded, are long enough to rub against the stucture of the arm hold and occaisionally get caught and snagged as the belt tries to rotate. So, yes and no, orange connectors could work but I don't reccomend it. Might be able to make a smooth surface for them so they harmlessly glide over. Switching to black ball-socket connectors solved the problem for me.

Perfect Duck (author) in reply to KnexBuildFreakJan 3, 2008. 2:39 PM
Given the information I got from the last step of your instructable, I have to conclude that the Cyclone here is more powerful than your machine gun, on the order of possibly 2-3 times. This is because of major differences in the barrels. The cyclone barrels give the ram an entire 3.5 inches of acceleration space before it even hits the ammo it's going to be firing, allowing it to reach a very fast speed before striking. Also, twice as powerful rubber bands as what I see yours using.

Also, Cyclone has more barrels, 16 vs. 19.

I wish we could compare videos, but here's what I have, two cyclones (both operated by me at the same time) firing off a full load of grey rods (Like most every other machine gun cannot do) It can fire red and yellow rods a whole lot harder, but you get the idea.

Perfect Duck (author) in reply to Miles Tails ProwerDec 27, 2008. 2:30 PM
Well you could hold two of these and have two chains that way. Really, one cyclone alone is better than the K'nexeucutioner because its ammo belts are much more potent and it has a longer range.
Miles Tails Prower in reply to Perfect DuckJan 6, 2009. 10:06 AM
Okay. Well I am soon getting alot more gears, I will purchase 30 or something so I can build this. I will also fit in my very powerful All Terrain Trekker, because I don't have Cyber K'NEX motors... (I wish I had them.)

Perfect Duck (author) in reply to polabearboiJun 10, 2008. 7:53 PM
That motor would have to be placed apart from the belts because it wouldn't fit inside. I generally dislike putting too much twisting force on K'nex rods which would have had to be done to give it a long drive shaft. I have the high-power grey all-terrain trekker motor, but never really used it much.

Perfect Duck (author) in reply to the-ruler-of-crazinessNov 10, 2008. 10:57 PM
The ammo wraps around its own motor, so there's no long shafts or connections between the power source and its destination. To have a crank coming in from the outside would be bery difficult to build, considering the limitation that there's less room to work with once the ammo is fully loaded (nothing can stick out too far from behind). I've thought of ways to do it but none that I liked. The only way to really do it is to have such a crank actually be in the -front-.

hey perfect duck can you use orange conectors to hold the rubber bands on intead of those pices that hold ball joints together
Perfect Duck (author) in reply to deviantFeb 21, 2008. 1:11 AM
Orange connectors are longer, and will rub up against, or potentially un-snap, as they rotate past the structure for the arm-rest (Where the red rod at the center, underneath the battery pack is). You may find another way around this problem, but I changed to black ball socket connectors, which just barely fit without touching.
deviant in reply to Perfect DuckFeb 22, 2008. 2:19 AM
the only thing problem i have is that i've only got about 10 black ball sockets
dsman195276 in reply to deviantMar 25, 2008. 8:12 AM
i was able to get by by changing the balljoints to grey connectors(well light grey connectors, i ran out of dark greys) you have to find you own way of ataching the rubberband to the connector because it has to go through the hole.

Hmm... Very good gun worked well a little confusing in some areas but overall + 1

What if there was a gun that had three revolving barrels that were triggered with a knex piece having three gears on it and each level you push, it would trigger the corresponding barrel.

How about this barrel X 3

It would be nice to have an unreal tournament gun =/ sadly i dont have enough pieces.... just bought enough to get two cyclones... and just enough to come up with an idea....

They're no heavier than paintball guns.
- The ammo belts took an excruciatingly long time to build. The repetitive process almost drove me insane. The rest was easy and fun. (I like building when it's not the same damn thing over and over again!)
- Thanks. I owe inspiration to my earlier K'nexecutioner project, and Perfect Dark.
- Medium gears are an elusive piece that only large sets seem to come with. I never have enough of them myself. Took every last one I had to make the cyclones.

Perfect Duck (author) in reply to Shmuli9Jul 4, 2007. 4:44 PM
The old-school grey wall-outlet motor with the worm gear and white cog is attached very differently to K'nex models. to motorize things with it require a lot of internal space that the Cyclone doesn't have. Incompatible, unless you can create your own crazy way of retrofitting it on. You're on your own for that, my friend.

I tried reducing the number of cogs, but the problem is that the cyclone belt is not very tight to begin with, and I had the system de-rail itself a couple times.

The Cyclone is absolutely amazing. And surprisingly, the red classic motor does work well in it. I can shoot 17 rounds in about 5-6 seconds using the classic motor. That for me is fine. As far as problems go, there was only one for me, power. At first I used one red rubberband on each barrel. When the block was moved, the pin delivered minumum force to the white rod. Insteam of firing out, the rods kind of poured out onto the floor. Then I went back, and put on 2 rubberbands for each barrel. By doing that, the rods shot fine, and I was able to get a good 30 feet. Anyways, I do reccommend this gun to anyone with alot of red gear, and a good classic motor. It's worth the wait to see the

yo blackrod i made the cyclone with a good working classic motor and it works, but if i but the rams on and pull them back the whole damn thing doesn't move. Do you think you can help me out?
Perfect Duck (author) in reply to qwerty123456789Jun 29, 2007. 5:55 AM
If it is the triggers themselves refusing to be flipped that are causing the jam, you have the triggers set too far back, where they tend to lock up. Leave them halfway. The less they need to be pushed, the less strain on the motors.
BLACKROD in reply to Perfect DuckJun 29, 2007. 5:10 PM
There is also another problem that can cause jams. On the right Side of the Cyclone in the images above, there is a single red gear on the middle of one side. Sometimes while the belt is rotating, the chain is pushed on the side, and the gear doesn't allign with the chain. Instead the chain is under the red gear and stuck. So, you have to manually pull the chain up and reallign it. For me, that has been the most common.

Mad Cat in reply to BLACKRODJun 28, 2007. 10:06 PM
Hmm, it's a shame that the video uses the crappy motors. I tried using one of those when I first made this gun, and the barrels didn't even move. So now, I am using Cyber K'nex motors, and they have absolutely no problem at operating the gun. It never jams.
BLACKROD in reply to BLACKRODJun 28, 2007. 3:36 PM
This video shows what your performance will be with a classic motor.
Perfect Duck (author) in reply to BLACKRODJun 28, 2007. 4:17 PM
Oh, that's just awesome! I did indeed enjoy. I was happy enough when you showed me the picture of yours and was going to comment, but then this popped up. Motor's not nearly as fast as mine, but I'm still tickled you got it working. I was getting worried for a while that people with classic motors were wasting their time (mine suck) so... I'll just repeat myself and say that's awesome.
Mad Cat says: Jun 21, 2007. 12:47 AM

mmzdaniel in reply to Mad CatJun 21, 2007. 6:15 AM
how far can it shoot and how fast? (f you can measure the speed of the bullet that is)
Stealth Raptor in reply to mmzdanielJun 27, 2007. 2:03 PM
I built the right handed cyclone for Duck, and when it comes to speed, over a 10-15 ft area, its average velocity was just under 10 meters per second. Obviously, however, it loses velocity very rapidly after leaving the gun.
mmzdaniel in reply to Stealth RaptorJun 27, 2007. 2:17 PM
thats not very fast.... yet if i had the pieces i would build 2 of those and make my lil bro cry all day lol... im evil!
Mad Cat in reply to mmzdanielJun 22, 2007. 12:28 AM
For me, it goes around 45 feet, which is better than most of my single shot guns. As for speed, all I can tell you is that it hurts when you get shot!

Perfect Duck (author) in reply to mmzdanielJun 21, 2007. 6:45 AM
I haven't got any equipment for measuring meter-per-second bullet velocities. If I did, I could use the projectile weight and measure kinetic energy in joules, which I've always been wanting to do. How much inertia a rod is bestowed is a measure of how much air it can push out of the way as it travels. All I can say is it's got the most range of any K'nex machine gun to date. Okay, I'm going to rant. No matter how hard you throw a tiny styrofoam cup, I can guarantee you can't throw it 15 feet. Why? It doesn't have enough mass to keep its speed as the air stops it. The same holds true for K'nex and other lightweight plastic projectiles. Power does improve range, but there is diminishing returns. Doubling the strengh may only add 5 or so feet of maximum range. Aerodynamics reduce air drag, so I'm going to very soon make some flighted rods to really answer your question.
llovaen in reply to Perfect DuckJun 25, 2007. 9:39 AM
you have a camera, no?
somewhere it should give you the fps
all you need is that, and a backdrop with marks at equal intervals so you can measure the progress of the projectile from frame to frame
then you can get the velocity using the simple equation: velocity = distance/time
doable?
Perfect Duck (author) in reply to llovaenJun 27, 2007. 2:18 PM
I'll definately look into that if I ever make a longer video for the Cyclone.
Perfect Duck (author) in reply to Mad CatJun 21, 2007. 1:34 AM
Do you know what this means!? Means I succeeded. :D Do you have as much trouble as me trying to load the 19th barrel without the first one triggering? It's possible but, I normally just load 18.
Mad Cat in reply to Perfect DuckJun 22, 2007. 12:26 AM
Um, sometimes when I try to put the rods in the barrels after I loaded all of the barrels, the trigger nearest to the trigger flipper gets set off prematurely. Like you said, I sometimes just load 18, and yes, you did succeed! I don't have enough pieces for two though.

Perfect Duck (author) in reply to DannyJun 23, 2007. 4:47 AM
The problem is that the gear-teeth extend further beyond, and it's towards the extrusian of the center hub. Only one side of yellow gears can carry gear-chains. For the side-peg motors, 5 of 12 gears must be red. For the classic-style, 4 of 11 must be red.

Perfect Duck (author) in reply to knexguyJun 22, 2007. 1:20 AM
I could never possibly have the patience to sit there and build 4 of those massive ammo belts. Heck, I had Stealth Raptor copy my first one for me. Also, Cyclone does take a tedious time to reload. It's great for show, but impractical in a K'nex fight (Unless you use something else, and keep Cyclone loaded and hidden to fall back to). For less time and parts, you could equip everyone with both a Red Impact and a single-shot pistol instead, which I reccomend.

Mepain says: Jun 17, 2007. 5:43 PM
Are you going to post a "parts needed page?" If so, I might make two!! But of course I need to make sure I have enough pieces. I thought you said that each bullet had individual recoil springs? Would it have hepled powerwise if they did?
Perfect Duck (author) in reply to MepainJun 17, 2007. 6:18 PM
In Step 1, I listed off what supplies the ammo belt will really deplete - if you can handle 2x of what's listed there, you should be able to handle the rest.
Perfect Duck (author) in reply to MepainJun 17, 2007. 5:56 PM
They wouldn't have been limited to just 2 rubber bands per barrel, and it would have used a grey-rod as firing pin. So yes, lots of power. The barrels extended even further out from the weapon. After making a couple rounds, I figured that it was getting a little rediculous (Heavy!!) so I scrapped the idea.
ewilhelm says: Jun 17, 2007. 5:50 PM
Any chance of posting a video so we can see it in action?
Perfect Duck (author) in reply to ewilhelmJun 17, 2007. 5:59 PM
There are a couple clips of the 2.1 version in the forum topic - http://www.instructables.com/forum/T67RBSZF23Z3ABI/?comments=all#CRF4Z7CF2ZML5CI

But I have yet to make a really cool video showing it off like I did for the first K'nexecutioner.

flaming_idiot_dude says: Jun 17, 2007. 12:21 PM
How long does it take to reload?
Perfect Duck (author) in reply to flaming_idiot_dudeJun 17, 2007. 2:59 PM
Each barrel is loaded like a typical one-shot K'nex gun, so fully loading the thing can be tedious. It takes as long as you can imagine.
Easy Button says: Jun 17, 2007. 6:48 AM
i shall make this
Shadow64 says: Jun 17, 2007. 6:35 AM
