Step 2: Multitool - The right tool for the right job

Picture 4417.jpg
Since you can't carry a toolbox in your pocket, carrying a good quality multitool will give you quick access to many of the tools you might need. The one in the picture below is my current multitool, but I imagine one of those fancy Leatherman Squirts would be better (hint hint!). This tool gives you quick access to a knife, pliers, a small saw, bottle opener (which can be used to pry open things other than bottles) and both flat and phillips screwdrivers.

In a Zombie survival situation, there is no end to what you could use a multitool for, but here is a short list of ideas:

- Opening canned food
- Building other, larger tools
- Cutting branches to use for weapons or tools
- Sharpening things to a point
- Opening electronics equipment to repurpose their components
- Attached to the end of a sturdy stick, it could be a hammer or a club

This is your most important and versatile tool. Make sure you have it with you at all times.

The Squirt is 30$. I carry the Squirt E4 and one of the smallest Swiss Army knives, and have saved the day on several occasions by being the only one around with wire strippers, tweezers, and screwdrivers. I also carry a tactical flashlight and a proper pocket knife.

I wouldn't take on a zombie with the Leatherman, but it sure is handy for everyday life.

My girlfriend got me a pocket knife/multitool for my birthday. It's great but kind of bulky. I've been thinking of building myself a small high power flashlight from parts on dealextreme, I think it would be really useful to have!

don't use a POS $5 cabella's tool for any job, spend $40 and get a nice leatherman. I would try to spend at least twice that if I didn't already have a decent tool.

Oh I know, but this one had the benefit of being a christmas present and therefore had a price tag of "Free."  I plan on upgrading one of these days.  I was really hoping to win in the pocket sized contest--a new Leatherman was one of the prizes.  Alas, I'll have to wait until I've got the spare cash.

Ahh, I see. This really is a pretty fun pocket project :) Btw if you want some advice don't get anything bigger than a juice if you want to carry it in your pocket.
