Introduction: The Pocket Tacklebox

Picture of The Pocket Tacklebox

Do you love fishing? If you do, then you will love this mini tackle box made with just an altoids tin and a couple popsicle sticks. This tacklebox will have 6 storage areas for all of your hooks, line, and sinkers (No pun intended).

Step 1: Materials

Picture of Materials

To make an altoids tin tackle box, you will need these common household items:

An empty Altoids tin,
A pair of heavy duty scissors,
A used gift card,
A hot glue gun,
6 popsicle sticks,
Spraypaint (optional).

Step 2: Modifying Your Gift Card

Picture of Modifying Your Gift Card

In this step you will cut your used giftcard. All you need to do is cut a little off the corners so it will easily fit into the altoids tin. If you want, you can spraypaint the modifyed giftcard for a more profesional look.

Step 3: Cutting the Popsicle Sticks

Picture of Cutting the Popsicle Sticks

This step will require some thinking, your heavy duty scissors, and a ruler. You are going to cut the 6 popsicle sticks into:

Three 2 and 1/4 inch long peices,
One 1 and 1/4 inch long peice,
Two 2 and 3/4 inch long peices,
Four 1 and 7/8 inch long peices.

Step 4: Start the Pull Out Tray

Picture of Start the Pull Out Tray

In this step you will start making the pull out tray. After you spray paint the gift card, you need to take your two 2 and 3/4 inch peices and hot glue them to the long sides of the giftcard. Then take two 1 and 7/8 inch peices and hot glue them to the short sides. You should have a giftcard with popsicle sticks making a rectangle.

Step 5: FInishing the Pull Out Tray

Picture of FInishing the Pull Out Tray

To finish the pull out tray, all you have to do is glue your last two 1 and 7/8 popsicle stick peices and glue them inside the rectangle like shown in the picture.

Step 6: Finishing the Bottom

Picture of Finishing the Bottom

In this step you will finish the bottom (Hence the title). First, glue two of your 2 and 1/4 inch long peices onto the inside left and right sides. Then place your one 1 and 1/4 inch long peice sticking out from the middle of the right side peice. To finish it off, put your last 2 and 1/4 inch long peice against the 1 and 1/4 inch long peice.

Step 7: Finishing the Project

Picture of Finishing the Project

To finish the Pocket Tacklebox, all you have to do is fill the compartments with hooks, weights, swivels, ect. It is very portable because all you have to do when you're done using it is put the pull out tray on top of the inside compartments. When you're ready to use it again, open the altoids box and pull out the tray.

Thanks for watching!

Actually, this can be reconfigured into a bass fishing kit. I just made one, complete with fishing line and a small handle for fishing without a rod. I realize this thread is dead, but just thought I'd mention it for anyone that might still come across this 'ible.

I added a jewelry bag with fishing line and glued the knot instructions for the hooks into the lid. He's gonna love it!

Absolutley genius idea. Its perfect for my ultralight fishing. All i had was small popsicle sticks, so i had to do some of this differently, but it came out the same way.

OMG SO EASY YET SO AWESOME

DonT3 (author)2015-06-30

glue a thin magnetic sheet like the ones the use for calenders and biz card to the area your hooks are as long as the are steel hooks they wont fall out as easy if you tip the kit over when its open.. i alsoo added some red yarn and colored pipe cleaners for imitation bait

hholland419 (author)2014-11-06

nice kit! I secure my hooks with a safety pin to keep them from rattling around & getting "tangled"

edvannatta (author)2012-08-16

like information this ? ok

l_skywalker (author)2011-10-08

you might even be able to rig a section that swings upwards...hard to explain but if youve seen the other tackle boxes there are some with things that swing up... if you mod this please post pics! thanks

thanks for the idea i will do that probily friday

I just built this project in about 30 minutes. I used super glue to see how it would hold and its fast drying. Very good instructions. This is going in my pack tonight. Thanks!

You should consider entering this in the pocket sized contest. I would definatly vote!

scrollsawcharlie (author)2010-12-10

i before e except after c. Piece is the exception to the rule, :)

.... except when sounding like 'a' like in neighbor and weigh....lol!

I used a can of monster (energy drink) instead of the gift card. I hope you do not mind but I used this idea in one of my instructables (I put a link to this page to accredit you for it of coarse. Here's the link if you want to check it out: https://www.instructables.com/id/Fishing-with-altoids/.

sweet project

PJPEEJ (author)2011-03-06

Can you put dry bait in it? Like, will it stay fresh?

scrollsawcharlie (author)2010-12-10

Great project

hackmattr (author)2010-08-17

This is a good idea. I get addicted to these mints in school and have a ton of containers. I needed a compact fishing kit.

dkop1 (author)2010-07-06

Like this 'ible. may i suggest some spooled fishing line? great when you're fishing without a rod. or you could make your own fishing rod from branch, pole, et. etc.

hossweightlifter (author)2010-07-02

ima fly fisherman so i made a fly 1 with a roof works grt

hippyland2 (author)2010-01-17

you sould add another giftcard in betweenthe sides so that when you close it the contents dont intermingle

Granzeier (author)hippyland22010-05-03

Hippyland2,

I think that the pull-out tray is supposed to be taken out of the lid and placed in the bottom of the Altoids tin (right-side-up) and then close the lid.  The bottom (gift card) of the pull-out tray keeps the items from intermingling.

Halotripple3,

This is a great 'ible, thanks.

pogoman12345 (author)2010-04-26

i just finished mine and its great but i used a little too much glue so its looks really messy.
i found that the tin would not stay closed the greatest so i took a elastic band (the ones you get from produce) and i kept it together no matter how hard you shook it.
5/5!

SkunkRyder (author)2010-03-30

just made one of these for my fiance, he loved it! now all of our friends want one too. thanks for the amazing instructable! now what do i do with all of these mints?

JohnMichael (author)2009-07-18

Have you considered gluing some magnets in it to help keep hooks and such from being spilled?

Halotriple3 (author)JohnMichael2009-07-19

The tray and dividers are so tight that everything stays in it's place even when you shake it upside down

JohnMichael (author)Halotriple32009-07-19

I do like this idea and am considering making one myself. I am working on figuring out a way to fit in a slip-bobber.

eddy14777 (author)JohnMichael2010-01-16

just put a peice of a cork for a bobber

JohnMichael (author)Halotriple32009-07-19

I was thinking more about the box being bumped when it is open. Just a thought...

eddy14777 (author)2010-01-16

hey you should add some small peices of a cork for a bobber

Hmff (author)2009-11-23

D.L.H. (author)2009-09-06

It is good but, can you also add a tiny roof for the tackle equipment not to get lose and inter mingle.

SkateboardingForLife (author)2009-09-04

nice idea man!!

sabbysayshi (author)2009-08-26

hidudes

browncar (author)2009-07-19

I guess you could make three or 4 compartments inside. Actually any size you would need and use it to hold spoons or small lures .

piratequeenfaber (author)2009-07-19

instead of an old gift card you could use and old i.d.; that way if you lose it your name is in it and not going any where

BLASTFEMI (author)2009-07-19

I want one! Great job!

garooob (author)2009-07-16

The pull-out tray and popsicle-stick dividers are the best Altoids modification I've seen yet! I should add them to mine!

andi456 (author)2009-07-10

This is cool. It doesnt have to be just a tackle box either, like for people that arent into fishing.

dpr (author)2009-07-10

good for sunfish, but for bass, big no. just like the pen fishing rod good for sunfish only.
