The Ring Locket (Aimed at men)

Well, i think the idea of a locket is a great one, a simple little thing that goes everywhere with you, with a few memories to remind you of good times when things are a bit dull.

Problem, men also might have a special someone, or a particular memory they wish to keep near, either when away from home, or at times when things are a little less happy. The problem is, men can not really wear lockets, as a locket is a thing that women normally use.

Thus I introduce the Man Locket.

Based around a ring on a chain, which is something any man can manage to pull off.

Step 1: Find a suitable ring.

CIMG5184.JPG
For the best results here, a normal deep mens ring is needed. Like the one i used the depth is between 5-10mm.

Obviously, this is a great way to 'up-cycle' an old ring that doesn't fit, or maybe a present that you don't wear.

Whatever the reason, bring an old piece of jewelry back to life.

I like this one, I'm doing my own version as I type, thanks for the idea!

I used to have that ring you used, ahh nostalgia. This a great project and I think I shall attempt it in the near future, I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks for a cool idea.

Sweet! I'm definitely doing this as soon as I'm done making a ring, maybe like this one...

Sweet! You have to post a picture if you do manage it!

I'm afraid the quarter ring might not be "deep" enough of a ring for this project, though. Maybe if I continue to beat it down along the edges, it will eventually get wide enough...

Excellent!  Question: do you dismantle the pocket each time you need your SD card?  Is it tricky to take apart and put back together?  Does the leather eventually wear and lose it's ability to fit snugly against the ring, which would cause theSD card to fall out? My finances are really tight, and I'm hoping to make gifts instead of buying them this year.  Your project will be way nicer than a store bought trinket. You are brilliant!!

Its very easy to slide the sections in and out, but I cut the two leather sections so they fit very snug and do not fall out easily. The SD card is easy to get out, but due to the little pocket it sits in, it does not fall out easily.

I tweeted it!

awesome idea!! I love it!

Cool idea! So, the sections just friction fit into the ring? I was just wondering if they would pop out in normal wear or do they stay put? Awesome ible!
gmjhowe (author) in reply to Stew2Jun 20, 2009. 12:17 PM
They are pretty tight, i think the softness of the leather helps to hold it in best. Just the card would probably come out.

I have a ring almost identical to that! Except mine has a differant insert!

You should do more stuff like this to help people who are different...

do you now have the urge to sit on a rock, looking at your ring and saying my preciousssss? If so... you may need a special kind of help... Regarding the 'ible... I shall be making one at some point. Keep up the good work
gmjhowe (author) in reply to okoshimaApr 18, 2009. 12:07 PM
Haha, no i have yet to have that urge, i once almost choked on the ring, had to make myself gag to get it back! Be sure to show some pics if you do.

Much coolness. If I where you, which I'm not (however that would be terribly interesting if I was, but then it would be rather creepy, two completely different alters in one body it would be fascinating to do a study... y'know I'm just gonna drop that now..), but I'd pop a small eylet in the leather and stuff to keep it from tearing.

Indeed, something like that might be a good extra.

I like the way it fits together / comes apart, nice & compact.

(is that sink-plug chain?)

gmjhowe (author) in reply to lemonieApr 14, 2009. 1:13 PM
Its an old ball chain of some dog tags. The way the sections just fit inside the ring is very pleasing to play with etc.
lemonie in reply to gmjhoweApr 14, 2009. 1:33 PM
Oh yes, I'd forgotten about dog-tag chain - it goes well. L

Very cool, I like your idea of recycling jewelry in this fashion. Where does one get leather so thick?
gmjhowe (author) in reply to BerkinApr 14, 2009. 2:23 AM
The thick piece is actually two bits glued back to back. I get most my leather of ebay. Thanks for the comment.
