The Sock-ta-pus! (**With Updates!**)

I'm a big fan of octopi, squid, and other tentacled creatures, and I don't know how anyone wouldn't be. Using a pair of socks, some stuffing, and a needle and thread, you can create this nifty stuffed version that's perfect for kids or any other cephalopod-loving folk.

Step 1: You'll Need. . .

  • - a pair of socks (I went with knee-high argyle, and have plans to also make a sock-ta-pus with these super cool black knee socks with flames on them - I'll post pictures when I finish that one)
  • - scissors
  • - needle and thread (if you had a sewing machine, you could use it as well - it'd make this even faster and easier)
  • - pins
  • - stuffing/batting
  • - a knitting needle or pencil (to turn the legs right side out)

Thanks so much! My sister's puppy really is a sweetie (as is my adorable cat :) ).

This is a great project for orphan socks... We all have them, and you could call it your orphan socktopus... Until you make it more buddies! Might be a great cat toy if stuffed with some catnip too... :)

Thanks so much for your comment! It'd be a great way to put those lonely socks to good use, and the catnip is also an awesome idea!

This is really hard to understand. Just thought i'd mention.
shesparticular (author) in reply to Superhero-ApriAug 14, 2009. 6:44 AM
I'm not sure if others agree, but do you have any suggestions that might help? I'd be happy to add more explanation if you clarify what is hard to understand. I've added a few illustrations of some of the steps - they're not great, but I hope they might help some.

Ah. There we go. Thank you.

I'm a little confused. On Step 2, we cut the foot part off of the socks, but on Step 4, it says one of them still has the foot? By the way, can you catch a socktapus with a fishnet stocking?
shesparticular (author) in reply to jbreckenAug 11, 2009. 9:06 AM
Awesome catch! I'm sorry about that - it was actually a typo (which in reading it again made no sense at all). Step 2 should have said (and now does) to cut the foot (really about 4 inches of the toes) off of only one sock. This is then what gets tucked into the whole foot of the other sock in Step 4. Hmm, that's a good question - it just might work I think.

It's so cute, cool idea to make it from a socks!
shesparticular (author) in reply to ChrysNAug 10, 2009. 4:12 PM
Thanks so much! The knee socks actually ended up being a little bit long (I think at least), so normal socks would probably work really well.
kissiltur says: Aug 10, 2009. 9:01 AM
What a fun idea - thanks. Now to make Sock Cthulhu! Maybe keep the foot on both socks and then splice the two together to make a more squamously oversized Cthulhu head...
shesparticular (author) in reply to kissilturAug 10, 2009. 9:04 AM
Thanks! I bet you could just not slice quite as far into the leg portion of the sock when you cut the strips to make the legs - that way you'd have a larger portion for the head. Please do post pictures if you give it a shot!

very well made when i first read it, i thought it said "shock-ta-pus"!

Thanks so much! The stitches got a little stretched, but I think overall it turned out really well.
